Ignition switch - is this a good fix

Got the ignition switch problem while out on the Yorkshire moors last night but fortnuately after about 20 minutes the dial lights came on and it started. After getting it home, no amount of fiddling with key would get it going. Checked battery, earths and block connectors. Finally squirted switch cleaner through the small gap in the base of the ignition switch, and hey presto everything's working again. Last year I sprayed in ACF50 to protect it, and I'm wondering if it collected loads of gunge that the switch cleaner has now dissolved. So my question is has anyone else 'cured' the problem with switch cleaner (smells like carbon tet)

PS I used one of those thin straw things you get with aerosols, but I need a longer one if I'm going to do it again without taking the horn cover off - anyone know a source?

..you could use any electrical contact cleaner I suppose, but 99% of ign. switch failures are due to heat...to much heat passing through the switch, melting the solder contact points..if you haven't done the eastern beaver mod, now is the time..

Full marks to Triumph North East in Newcastle (UK). They learned about the problem this morning at 9:00 and by midday had picked the bike up and taken it to their workshop. I don't think they have had chance to contact Triumph yet.
As it happens I got an eastern beaver kit last week to make my headlights brighter. I'm hoping I can persuade the shop to fit it for me while they have the bike.

Mike in the Update kit there is a change to the ignition harness at the plug. it is supposed to have three wires cut out of the male and female plug and then they get their own seperate plug. You ought to ask the dealer about that also. here is a link provided by Leigh to the PDF directions for the update kit. It has the wireing modifications made to the ignition harnes and the guage harness.

Thanks Warp - I will pass that on. Are you saying though, that if the update is done, I can't use the Eastern beaver kit?
By the way my Rocket was one of the last made before they changed to the Roadster.

ah ... I see ... Glad you posted that link, because when I was investigating possible poor connections under the tank I saw a connector block with 3 cut wires - I assumed it was something to do with the Meta Alarm that the dealer fitted, but it seems more likely it's the Triumph update kit mod. One would imagine (hope) that Triumph made sure they did all the update mods to bikes as they came off the production line, and it looks like in this case they did.

yes it was supposed to be a change they were going to impliment after the engine serial numbers listed in the PDF file. SOunds like yours was done especaially if the one going to the gauges was changed completley. You can see a picture of it in the PDF file as it resembles the actual new one.

I too am now suffering from this problem, my VIN number is long after the numbers listed on the PDF and I remeber seeing the cut wires when last the tank was up. It's just ruined my holiday in Scotland and caused huge problems getting home. I have already had one ignition switch replaced about 8 months ago when the bike was still in warranty but the problem seems to have come back with vengeance.

Any suggestions as to what I should be doing next? My dealer wants to have the bike in for an examination and won't get any parts in until they have carried out inspection (not in warranty anymore) but I don't want to be spending three limbs worth of money letting them have a "look".

you'll have to do another ign switch or keyless ign, but more importantly, see post #2...or you'll be doing again...bears repeating, relays.......
