Dan the ignition is weak for sure, but it's demise is from the solder joints getting soft from more current than they can handle. The headlights should have been on a relay from the start, but for whatever reason Triumph ran the full load through the ignition switch. You can actually see the power loss from the resistance in the headlights, they have a yellow tinge to the light. The relays protect the switch, yes ... but the immediate benefit is being able to see better with the bright white light the headlights give off. I can see so much better at night now, don't even need the driving lights I mounted below the radiator now.
I had my switch fail under warranty and saw that it's not just the switch that has to be replaced, but everything that works off the key (seat release on standards, fuel cap). I decided it was cheaper to install Eastern Beaver's relay harness than pay for all that myself next time. It's all been working great to date.

Had the ignition switch replaced on my 05 and 09. The 05 was replaced out of warranty and the 09 with just 5k miles. Before I put the new switch in the 09 I had the relay kit for the headlights in hand, so I hope that helps.

i have had no problem with my ignition switch and i have heated grips the r3t fog lights and the fog lights from my 06 classic hooked up on it also just about 29000 miles on it

Someone suggested that they will make the harness longer for mounting the relays under the tank. I think that would have made the job easier to do, you may want to ask them for that option. With the relays and the flasher unit, I have the space behind the headlights full to the brim. :D

I have had a starter relay go bad but the ignition switch has been good for 13k miles now.

My dealer just finished replacing the ignition switch on my '09 (after a month + wait for the part.) The bike had less than 4,000 miles on it when it went intermittent and stopped working in July. On closer inspection the switch seemed to be fine, but the electrical connector was shot. One of the pins on the switch harness connector was loose and degraded. The mechanich thinks the fact that it was shipped from the factory with no grease was a contributing factor. I also lost my headlights 2 days after the switch - this turned out to be a bad relay.

Oh, man! I sure hope it doesn't take a month to get my bike back! I was assured my bike would be ready last Saturday. Now I'm begining to wonder.

I have a LD ride scheduled for 10/28-11/2 and I'd really hate to miss it...

I understand the Dealer is waiting for a part to arrive from Artlanta.

I hope they get your switch in and done in time! There were 2 Rockets behind mine in the shop waiting for ignition switches too. The dealer ordered a bunch of switches, but only got one - which I got. I guess they're having a run on them?
