Guys:

I'm breaking in my new R3T and it's hard to tell how tight I'm revving the engine. I'm not coming near the redline, nor am I lugging it, but I'd sure like to have a tach to refer to. I've driven manual transmissions all my life and I drive much more by tach than I do by speedo.

I've written to Dakota Digital to ask if their tachs would work with the R3T's triple, but they haven't even bothered to respond.

Has anyone installed a tach on their R3T? If so, what did you use and can you provid me installation instructions?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I fitted one of these

Custom Multi-Gauge with OBDII

Here it is installed, maybe overkill if all you want is a tach but it plugs into the ecu socket and the only wiring you need is a +12v

yeh skip...wouldn't be without it now, only problem is its hard to see in bright direct sunlight with sunnies on, but I'm still working on that :)

I bought a cheap tach made by Equus off the shelf at my local O-Reilly auto parts store. It cost about 30 bones. I mounted it to my handlebar using a fifty cent pipe clamp from Home Depot wrapped in electrical tape. The mount is a bit ghetto and I plan on finding something a bit more elegant at some point. It's easy to wire up. There are 4 wires. The black is ground. The red powers the tach and the white powers the backlight. I put red and white together, crimped on a connector, and plugged it into an unused accessory socket I found under the tank (it only gives power when the ignition is on and I think it's meant for the auxillary driving lights, which I don't have). Finally, I slid the green wire into a connector on one of the coils, of which there are three, and are easily accessed after removing the right neck cover.

The tach works decently. It reads within 100 rpm of what Tuneboy reads. It's not a high quality instrument, but it's good enough for my purposes. And you can't beat the price.

Here are some pics.

Here's the bracket. Comes in a pack of 5.

Nico,
cheap is good.
I like cheap.
Does it work?
Yes it does.
Did you buy a bolt on part or Go your own way?
You went your own way,
Be proud,
over 100 years of Triumph tradition,
still going strong.
