Hi R3Owners Forums,

I'm currently facing an Issue with a german market RIII (also running in GER) having misfire troubles as well as a hunting Idle.

The bike belongs to my dad, and after being screwed over by local shops a few times, we've taken to address the big problem (high idle randomly, leading to the transmission going because my dad would notice the throttle essentially "stick" late) on the bike ourselves.

Before we could really start figuring our way through the bike though, the transmission went, which lead to it being given to a shop which had to rip both motor and trans out to swap the entire internals (gear 2 & 5, obv they did all gears because of wear, as well as input shaft afaik). After we got the bike back, it had apparently never shown any of the issues we've had running it when it was over at their shop, which would be the misfire as well as the hunting idle. It also still randomly would rise in RPM in Idle, so apart from the trans gone, the shop would clear the bike as "fine" after having swapped the wrong sensor twice as far as we can tell. (sec. TPS was shorting, they swapped the idle control).

Now were stuck with a bike that we dont know whats been done correctly on it, and after fixing the sec. TPS (courtesey of R-III-R-Turbo explaining to me how to do so and what to look for specifically under his YouTube video), were essentially back to still fighting both the misfire (specifically happens at slightly open throttle around 2k RPM, not on heavy accel or decel) and the Idle. Whilst I know the Idle is really not that big of an Issue on its own, given its not even hunting that much, I was hoping maybe it could be a clue to learning why the bike also developed a misfire.

I have run diag with TuneECU, there isnt any error codes, and the TPS as well as any other sensors are working fine for all I can tell. The motor should be asembled correctly and in spec (god I hope so lol), and any tests to triggering throttle or fuel supply it passes with flying colors. The bike does have over 60k KM on it, which I think is on the high side of most bikes out there on original running gear, but I still dont think the compression or fatigue of the metal will already be to blame.

Thank you for reading, If anyone has an Idea what could be causing either one or the other or both issues, im extremely glad for any advice, since I would really like to see my dad ride again, given hes now reaching the age where its becoming physically harder on him, and I want him to get to enjoy the bike as much as he can.

ps: reason im swapping from yt-comments to here is so that I can post video and photo should anybody be open to help me.

Also concerning the map of the bike, I cant seem to get my hands on a 20222 map for a stock 2005 Rocket III, so if anyone has the bike and can provide a stock hex for me to compare to the map thats on the bike right now (still named 20222 but I have to way to confirm it wasnt messed with at the shop), that'd be awesome.

Greetings from sunny North Texas. You can download your 20222 map from TuneECU maps database. The section you want looks like this:

As to the idle issue that could be the result of throttle body balancing as well as a TPS problem. Check the TBs are balanced and the voltages on the TPS are within spec.

I don't consider your mileage to be that high. I had 128000km on my 05 before selling it. It is still going strong. Usually it is the secondary TPS that causes idle problems (as already mentioned). try spraying the throttle linkages with lubricant while opening and closing the throttle. Maybe vacuum line problem for the misfire. Good luck.

How did you go with setting the primary TPS after?
Also I forgot to ask if you or the shop replaced the primary TPS?
the 04-09 Rockets had a primary TPS that is prone to going faulty, causing these issues. The newer revision of the part is good.

The early Rockets also had a recall on the ECU map. Have you popped your VIN into the Triumph VIN check website to see?

And finally, interested to see what your throttle balance values are too.
In fact if you can post up screenshots of all TuneECU pages here, while running the bike, we can see what sensors are doing what too.

Be ready for a lot of questions because working on something that someone else has worked on is a *****.
I will jump in here on one problem. The throttle stick! Back those cables off till they have good free play and then spray throttle springs good especially at front then do wot and let it fly shut. You can always adjust later
This is something that you can do quick and then move on to the other problems.
