This crossed my mind as well .... what kind of power does and HID system draw? If it's more than just stock headlights, you will have to install relays anyway or it'll melt the ignition switch too.
Yes, your lights run through your ignition system. When you install the relay kit the headlights run straight off the battery. Here's a link to show how to do it yourself or get the Eastern Beaver kit

HID's normally draw 35 watts. I've modded both cars and the Buell. The Rocket will get done once I make space under the seat for "things". Amongst things a lights on/off switch - which is btw a MUST if you are fitting HID.
The difference is stunning. 60% less current draw and 250-300% more light. Great this is that generally you'll be using a relay too so it's a real win/win solution.
The BIG question is not "to HID or not to HID" - but more whether you do only the dip in HID (this depends pretty much on where you ride) or whether you fit a "dipping HID".
The downside of dipping HID is that if the "bulb" goes you've lost both hi/lo - less of a problem on a R3 with twin lights. The downside of HID dip is that the high remains halogen and are notably less pokey. I have some extra hi bulbs so I can do a HID-lo and dual halogen hi beam. I have a friend who used to sell HID kits so he let me have one or two extra bits. 4300K gives a bit more light than a 5000K - about 10% - BUT I prefer 5000K
I have mounted bi-xenon H4 . I dont know the HID system but if you
say that you need 2 lamps one with discharge and high voltage for
high and an halogen for low , I think bi H4 are better on that point !
Yoou have only one bulb and a coil who displaces the bulb , de-centering
it for lo , and centering it for high !
I cant give you internet URL because all I have are in french and I doubt
you will go and see an url in foreign language ! But you can google it
in english .
