I always leave my helmet on, when going in to pay for my gas. Visor open, glasses off, and waving my money for all to see. To ****ed much trouble taking off and on. I also usually use the same gas station, so I'm not a stranger. Walk in, hands out of pockets, lay the money on the counter and tell em what pump I'm at. No problems so far.
Situation where they turned the pump off on me was all due to their fear of drive-offs. Servo has 40 or 50 pumps and all they are concerned about is getting ripped off for a tank of juice. What annoyed me was they just shut the pump off half way through me filling up. There is no law that says i can't fill my bike while wearing a helmet. I'm just jack of all these 'rules' that people with no 'authority' try to enforce. There's more than enough rules , laws and conditions that we have shoved down our throat daily without coping it from retailers .. f#ck'em i'll never fuel-up there again
Had a similar thing here in the UK recently. I was sitting on the bike to refuel it and they cut the pump and told me to dismount before they would turn it back on; if I hadn't needed the fuel I'd have ridden off.
Anyway I finished fuelling then went in to pay and ask what their problem was - got told that it was a Health and Safety issue since I could slip on some spilt fuel and knock the bike over WTF?? Tried to explain how stupid an explanation this was only to be told it was compaby policy and that was that - told the guy he was a *****and like you TC won't use that station again.

Only problem with that is you're taking out your frustration on some minimum wage counter help. His choices are to enforce the company rules or get fired. So the guy not only has a low paying, crap job, now he's got guys calling him a *****for doing it.
Kind of like calling the waitress names if you're food isn't cooked properly.
Ive never had a problem with paying with my helmet on the few times I wear it but I live in a pretty low crime area.
BTW....To our UK friends, the media doesn't tell you this because it doesn't support the liberal agenda, but like 96% of our gun crime is committed with ILLEGAL guns.
The 'sitting on the bike while re-fuelling' is another issue .. I've actually learnt I bide by the rules on that one .. although I think it's a load of crap and again mainly about drive-offs. I used to just drop the hose on the ground and ride off if they shut my pump off .. was slowly running out of service stations truth be known
I always have the bike between my legs while I fill it
Otherwise it doesn't get the tank full
Never had a problem
I have more of a problem trying to drive away because of all the people asking Nd commenting on the bike
Three minute fill up turns into ten

evomind,
How fortunate you are able to, "live in a pretty low crime area." NOT!!!
Your voice is refreshing! I recently rode through the State of Illinois - NOT CHICAGO.
I purposely befriended all those I could whenever I made a stop. 9 out of 10 folks I spoke with iterated similar comments to yours. The second most common comment was, "I didn't vote for that incompetent SOB!"
Best Regards,

PS: FWIW - Illinois had by far the worst maintained roadways of the 30+ states I visited.
