Garmin Wiring

Getting ready to wire up my Zumo 550 and was wondering how everybody is wiring there's up. Hot wire to the battery (God knows they gave you enough wire), or splicing into something that only comes on when the ignition is turned on.

I ran the wiring under the tank and attached it directly to the battery.

I think that's what I'm going to do. Now if I can just find the kick starter on this thing in case I leave it on and the battery runs down.
 
I hooked up a relay off of the accessories loop under the left side cover to power the relay so it gets/kills power up when the bike turns on/off.

Ran the wiring up the left side frame rail under the tank and out the left side of the neck between the windscreen and handle bars... out to the mount on the clutch side.
 
I just ordered the Triumph grip warmer wiring kit. It was only $30. i intend to plug that into the accessories socket. i will then cut those wires and attach the Garmin.
 
If it were me I would leave it hot all the time. It's a pain to pull over to make entrees on the GPS and leave the bike running and cooking you while you sit. Or leaving the key on to drain battery running lights etc. while you work. there is little drain from the gps. I have left mine on overnight with no ill effects.
Tie a reminder on the side stand.
 
The R3 Touring has plugs in the wiring harness for GPS, heated grips, and accessory lights. Since this is my first Rocket, I don't know if that's something new with the R3T.
 
Wired mine into the rear light wiring , wires are down by the battery , turns on and off with the ignition then
 
It is probably most easiest to just hook it up directly to the battery. When you put your Zumo in it's mount...it's on. What most are missing is that (at least in my case anyway) I do not use my Zumo except for when I may go on a trip. If I'm not on a trip, the Zumo isn't with me. And even when on a trip it is only on the bike when I'm traveling, when I'm in for for the night of I'm not on the bike for awhile (eating a meal for instance) my Zumo comes off of the mount and is locked away. I do not worry about running my battery down when using my GPS.

That's pretty much my take as well. I'd be afraid to just leave it on the bike. Even just running into the restroom real quick. Way too easy to undo and take off. I think hooking up to the battery it is. Thanks for all the replies.
