Front wheel wobble gone

I have had a hands off front wheel wobble between 30 and 45 mph for a couple of years now. I tried re tightening the steering stem nut and changing out the front tire, and while those reduced it slightly the wobble was still there. Today I changed out the avon front tire for a Dunlop D 404 and used dyna beads for balance.......wobble is now completely gone. I thought for sure it must be worn steering stem bearing.

One thing about the dyna beads though, when you mount the front tire and spin it around to see if it spins freely it sounds like the tire is rubbing against the fender. It took me a while to figure out it is the dyna beads making the noise, I would spin the tire and then suddenly stop it and I could hear the dyna beads fall down to the bottom.

I don't think I am going to ever go back to lead weights, the dyna beads work great, no ugly weight on the wheel, and they will never fall off.

Glad to hear your problem is gone. Just curious...did you have your prior tire re-balanced before replacing and using the Dyna-Beads?

I've used the Dyna-beads before with pretty good results. The physics make sense, but there are still those out there that shed doubt on the actual effectiveness of the "beads".

I noticed while installing the CAT bypass the other night that my rear tire has 10 lead weights stuck on it...I may try the beads myself just to rid the bike of those ugly stick-on weights.

No, I did not rebalance it. The tire was very worn and cupped, however, so was the previous front tire (metzler) but there was no significant change in front wheel wobble that time when I put on the new avon. I don't know if the dyna beads are what is doing the trick, or the D 404, all I know is the front wheel wobble is gone after years of being a PITA. Dang if feels good to go hands off and not have the front end shake rattle and roll.

10 weights on the rear? Wow! When I change out the rear I will use dyna beads also. Those ugly stick on weights are old tech, dyna beads are the way to go.

10 weights I'd have the shop carve those weights into maltese crosses if they're going to pepper the wheel with them. At least make it look like a custom option rather than the lazy man's way to tire installation.

I do my own balancing and have never put that many on. Even on my darkside. If you're running a bike tire then that is shoddy by the person mounting the tire. The makers put a stem mark on the tire at the factory to locate the tire so the stem weight is accounted for. After that it should take maybe 3 or 4 weights to fine tune it. You could have a bum tire there or a lazy installer. That said the dyna-bead option sounds like it may be worth investing in (especially if you go back to the same shop for your tires).
