anyone else have this problem? I mean the front of the engine covered in a light film of black. Oil around the water pump especially.
I clean it off and it is all back within a few thousand miles.
I have about 30k on the motor I believe. Thoughts?

Make sure you do not have the wrong design oil filter. A few years ago oil filters were redesigned by the few manufacturers that make a bunch of different brands. The threaded end cap on the new design causes leaks on some engines. Basically the filter "bottoms out" before compressing the seal. You cannot rely anymore on manufacturers and part numbers. You need to look at the end cap design. In some cases you can find two different designs with the same part number. It seems to effect bikes more than cars. You need an "inny" out an "outy" end cap.
Ian has a good idea other then the oil pump on the front you might want to check the crank shaft inspection plug to make sure it is clean and the torque spec is 18 Nm.
If you have a different air filter system like Triple filter or Ram Air make sure you periodically clean the filter. If it gets restricted the crank case pressure will find its way out!!!!
Now I was thinking about how people give the guys with the early bikes grief for saying they have a Roadster when in fact back then they did not call the bike a Roadster!!!! But they would sell you a Roadster Screen I guess it was because they new some day you would trade it in on a roadster or did they sell you a Roadster Screen to fit on your Standard or Classic roadster????
