Downshifting AS you slow down is not an issue, but if you use the engine to substitute the brakes, particularly from high rpm, it's not good for the valve train. I see heaps of kids with buggered engines as a result. Building an engine for a speedway sidecar, or solo, one has to do differently, as they have no brakes. Brake pads are cheap and easy to change. Please do not take this as an insult, but the engine is for going and brakes for stopping.
