greetings all, neewbe to the board and triumph family! 08 r111 custom.
i am getting ready to install the dresser bars on the beast and am concerned about taking the long frame bolt out that secure the tops of both bars. What kind of support is needed to hold the engine up? does it come out easy? has anyone had probelms getting it back in once it is removed? thanks for any advice!

You can do it on the sidestand. Loosen the nut on rhe bolt and then place a small bottle jack under the sump plate and lift the motor a bit until you can extract the bolt by hand. Line up the bars and install the bolt then let the bottle jack down. Won't take much, just a bit.

or,

You can slightly lift the bike with a floor jack ( like the Sears one) until the bolt comes loose and do it that way. Either way works.

Yes as Flip stated the key is to balance the engine. The best way to tell is to loosen the bolt and adjust the jack until the bolt moves freely.

If you are alone, watch when the bolt is about halfway out. when I did mine, the bolt stopped moving-the bolthead was just catching oin the rad. shroud-right side of bike. Just a heads up.

Welcome to the fray mooner. Just do what they said and it's a cake walk. Have used mine already in a minor miscalculation with the kickstand:eek:.

I assume you guys are talking about the Touring?

I've got an 08 Touring and got the dresser bars, but haven't put them on yet. Was having 2nd thoughts...Do they look good on the bike or is it too bulky? Do they add a lot of weight? I barely manage that monster at slow U-turns as it is. I'm sure it's good protection though, for the engine and your leg, no? Never had engine guards, though. Fishbein

.........Since when is weight a consideration? This ain't a YZ. The bars weigh maybe 8 pounds, you bike weighs 700.

And.. it's a Touring. It looks bulky already.. :) An engine guard isn't going to detract from any of the other bulkiness... :D

Really, I don't think an engine guard would detract from the looks of your Touring at all. It's a place to stretch out and adds a little extra protection, if you drop the bike at a stand still. If you're really going to wreck, an engine guard isn't going to do squat.
I wouldn't buy it so much for protection as much as I would buy it to use to put some pegs on, or extra lights.. :)
