I've owned an 05 and a 08. A standard and a touring. I ran both bikes very hard and never had a problem with either. I wouldn't be concerned about the year. You're going to love this bike.

At least if you buy the 05 it comes with a paint job. The new ones are just primer black and you still need to spend big dollars on a nice paint job. Also you will get lots of chrome. On a new one you could spend what you would spend on an engine rebuild to get some shine on her. Al

I have a 2006. First I bought the 6 year extended warranty when I picked her up new. Nothing happened. Now I have the up-date kit on the shelf in the garage and still nothing has happened. Personally I would not buy a 2005.

Never a good idea to buy a first year anything. Once they got things sorted out the Rocket seems to be a reliable bike. The trouble with the internet is that it can become a condensed version of an issue.....I mean that there are 1000s of Rockets out there with owners just riding them. The Rocket engine is very low HP for its size so it should give many many miles of trouble free riding with just basic maintenance.

08 for the Standards and 09 for the Classic was the last years of the great paint colors!!! Don't get me wrong I liked the Phantom Black but now there is just to much black and just to make a change Triumph went out of their way to add a fricken stripe!!!! Oh and in 2015 for even more money they will put the stripe off center!!!!!

The update kit is a bargain but the labor is going to set you back an estimated 26 hrs and from my research right around $3500.00 and that's a healthy down stroke on a new bike.

$US 134.60 per hour= $A 174.98 per hour that;s an $A4549 up date @$A 2.24 per minute or 37c a second, it makes looking for a later model or new a more attractive proposition.

AMEN on that, Jeff!
I learned that lesson with my 04 V2K!

Triumph shops I called and talk to about installing the update kit quoted as low as 12 hours (Baxter's) and as high as 20 hours. Most were in the 16 hour range. Even my local guy quoted 16 hours at $86 p/h. $1376 labor. But they have only done 1 so far.

OK I'll have to say after reading all the feedback i would probably not go forward with the purchase. the only bike available was the 05. Not an 09 08 or 10. It sounds like it is almost inevitable that the bike will have problems down the road. That is the gamble and would be very hard to explain to the wife why I let go of the Honda which is so reliable. It is hard to discern whether bike problems are 3%,5%,10% or more like 40, 50, 75% I guess feedback from 05 owners only would be very helpful. BTW Cardinal red, with highway bars, windshield, hardbags, throttle lock and 22000 miles for 6500. What kind of deal does that sound like to you all?

Three things in life you shouldn't skimp on I reckon .. motorcycles , tattoos .. and nice gifts for your girl ;)

I always thought it was motorcycles, surgeons and lawyers! If you need either of the latter 2 don't go for a cheap one ;)

The update kits are still available. Just got mine a couple months ago (it starts going in next weekend). Everything I've seen says $1600-$2000 labour. Gonna do it myself. The EB relay's $60 and 2 hrs if you solder wires!

Sounds like a decent price, but I wouldn't call it a steal. Have 'em go for $5k to cover the cost of the update install and I'd say you've found a good bike and price!
