Clutch Rattle Noise Question

Ya I was leaning that way myself. If the box was just recently gone thru my guess is the cir-clip was installed nackwards. That makes it easier to get bumped out of the groove

Every time we work on it we run into problems and only got a sunday to work on it....... cusrrently motor is ready to come out but no straps for lifting....... next weekend!

I had a somewhat similar (but not as bad) sound when my trans died last year. Exactly as warp mentions, circlip on 3rd gear migrated out of its' groove leading to catastrophe.

When splitting the cases you'll need the special tool to remove the flywheel (over the stator) at least, the rest can be lived without. Don't try to split the cases with the stator in place, there's a hidden bolt behind it that holds the halves together...

Yay finally found problem! Detent spring or whatever ya call it. But why do the three gear cogs look and smell burnt?

The reason for the noise was I think because I was in 4th gear when the spring snapped and 4th and 5th are the only floating gears meanwhile I was trying to also find neutral at the same time but the gear selector was not returning the 4th gear properly ya can see where the dogs were hitting.

It's just down to the manufacturing processes and how hot the gears get.

Glad to see you didn't cause any serious carnage in the gears. Just ensure you use red loctite where required when reassembling.

When putting the case halves back together, I suggest placing all the bolts in their respective holes before applying the anerobic sealant to the top case. Then rest the lower in place and start each bolt. It is a time constrained event, you have about 1/2 hour working time for them to all be torqued down. While that seems like ages, if your bolts are all in a pile and you're not perfectly clear which length goes where it can be a challenge.

Some have reused the bolts without issues. If you want less expensive (stronger) alternative bolts here you go, you'll need 3 packs:
ARP 661-1004: Black Oxide, M8 x 1.25, 35mm UHL, Hex | JEGS

Triumph ones are over $7 each and you will need 14.

Thanks claviger..... 14444444444444range that this issue started out me thinking its a clutch noise and only one other person having heard the noise, I figure it was because I was in 4th when it went and 4th and 5th are the only floating gears all the others spin with the shaft.
