Cam Blade Upgrade

At just 18,000 miles my 2006 SC R3 was exhibiting cam chain rattle on cold start-ups. On inspection, I found the cam chain had significant stretch (1/8") and warranted replacment. Additionally, I found the cam blades worn enough to replace as well. The surprise was upon ordering the new cam blades, they had been upgraded to a new design. The most significant changes are the chain guides are actually 1mm narrower, the tensioner blade is a slightly different shape, and the inner blade is now all plastic (no metal body). In the photos below, the new cam blades are at top of photo, and the old at bottom.

BTW, rumor has it that the R3 cam chain is exactly the same as the Hayabusa cam chain... somebody run over and tell the .com kindergarten.

Hombre, having the same done on my bike next week, also at 18k miles. The dealer told me they are the same blades they use in the R3T. This link will take you to my write up on the .com site.R3 Owners.com :: View topic - Cam Chain Again

By the way, Thanks for the pictures.

If anyone's interested to "do it yourself"... the Triumph part number is T1142049 (Spares Kit, Cam Blades $127 USD).

You should replace your cam chain at the same time, and since it's really not much more work... drop in Nev's mild cams for good measure. No dialing required.

Apparently you can no longer buy the tensioner blade and rubbing blade as separate parts. When you order one you get both in the new "Spares Kit, Cam Blades".

My 2005 has always had a cam chain "growl" on cold starts since day one. I have always let the oil pressure come up (while at an idle) until this noise goes away before I blip the throttle or ride. I'll bet these parts will take care of that issue also.

Did you have to re-dial your SC cams with the chain being stretched 1/8"?

We've had car motors that have had this issue. Ford Probes (which have a timing belt) will stretch so bad that the cams actually start and stop as the lobes hit the buckets because there is so much slop in the belt. Each time one lobe gets over the lifter the next one slams into place. It sounds like machine gun fire, its horrible.

Late 90's Altimas will have the chain stretch and it starts to sound like a chain saw. Some will break the chain guides. That car sucks to take off the front cover

Yes, my SC cams have to be re-dialed any time I take the cam chain off to keep them where I want them. It's also a frustrating job to get right.

Redesigned cam blades and new cam chain completely eliminated my cam chain noise.

I had the cam chain noise at cold startup ever since I got my bike... We basically pulled a 20K service at 15k miles before installing the Garrett turbo... Cam chain tension was adjusted and it has been quiet since....

Mike....
