Bike won't shift above 3rd gear...

Hate to say it but an off adjusted clutch cable shouldn't prevent shifting into the high gears. Sounds more like a transmission problem which should be looked at under warranty.

Just in case though, you can try adjusting the clutch looser so that the cable is tighter (loosen the adjuster lock nut and unscrew the adjustment bolt with the smaller knurl. Try a half turn at a time and test.) This might help if the clutch is set too tight but I don't think that is your problem.

Note, you should be able to power shift without using the clutch at all if the transmission is ok.

If it is a transmission problem it is best to trailer the bike in since you don't want things to disintegrate further and put metal bits into the engine.

Sorry if I'm being too simplistic, but it's not just a matter of adjustment on the gear lever, is it?

Similar thing happened with me (but I have rearsets) when the adjustment was out, and the lever wouldn't return properly, and therefore I had trouble changing gear.

Have you checked the mark on the lever marries up to the mark on the spline?

Was feeling quite smug that I'd actually suggested the right mechanical cure, but I cannot take the credit.

When I adjusted my rearsets myself, I'd cocked it up by tightening everything up too much, and stopped my gearlever returning properly.

Rode the last 30 miles to the UK Wild West meeting stuck in 3rd gear.

Taz & Rocket Steve sorted it out for me when I got there. (wife would of if she'd been there) :wink:

I had the same problem with my bike a 2005. I had the shifter return spring replaced under warrenty. Shifter would not return to pick up new gear. Always had to touch the shifter with my toe to push it down a little. It is a 2 to 3 day job, the front of the motor needs to be dissambled. Only problem I have had with the bike besides the fuel light.
