Another tire question

SO your saying the tires became superhot baking in the direct sun as I would expect them to be being black but I dont understand why the Z rated tires would be that much cooler Can you post some pics of the tires that you shredded that turned blue ?

I would think the CTs would run hotter with the low 28PSI compared to the 40-42 for the MC tires

Nope. And I don't run at 28 either - closer to 34 (depending on whose gauge you believe). Front closer to 40.

I have done tests with a tyre temp/pressure device. Not extensive as to get the sensor to communicate with the display - I had to remove sidecase frames and put the display out on an engine bar. And there are limits as to how much R+D I'll put in if it cannot coincide with daily use. I like side cases.

But - The Z rated M/C FRONT AND C/T REAR vary by very little in temp and pressure above ambient temperature. - 1-3ºC more or less (average 1.5º) - Pressures rise a couple of Psi above stood still.

With V rated - (mostly measured on the Cobra front) The temperatures fluctuated wildly - 15-20ºC above ambient. Pressures too but maybe 5-7 psi.

There is one thing about the ME880. I chatted with an Austrian Tyre dealer who is a Metz main dealer - as was his family before - pretty much since Metzler have made tyres. He has direct contact to Metz R+D (get the feeling his input is used for development feedback from the Alps). His info was that the V rated ME880 are in EVERY WAY identical to the H rated versions. It was made as an H rated tyre. But as EU law prevents using a LOWER grade tyre than is spec'd for the vehicle (they're German remember) - they resubmitted some and they supported V speeds so can be marked thus. The speed tests themselves are pretty much bollocks anyway if you read how they're done. But basically his statement was they are basically a WILDY over-engineered H rated tyre. The V Cobra he says is different to the H Cobra.I have to take his word for it.

As for the old rubber - I just told my tyre place to change the ruddy things - no pictures.

Re AZARO's - There are still some in stock obviously - But Delti in Europe (maybe the largest pan-EU tyre disti) has 7 left. I asked about more - NOT A CHANCE. So GET them now.

What pressure did you run in those tires ? and your saying METZ is using an H rated tire as a v also ? thats interesting We havnt seen any of that with any of the tires and Ive run the stock Metz to speeds over 180 mph with no ill effects and ran the stock Metz at the Dragstrip doing smoky burnouts and 8 second Ets @ 155-160MPH with no shredding

Art - I'm only passing on what I've heard re the Metz. But I have no reason to doubt the guy - he had nothing to gain from it - as he sells Metz's.

My shredding/balling was visible after running full tanks of fuel non stop at 120-140 (with a bust or two into 160) kph. So lets say almost two hours at 85mph. And as you may know - our highways are not that straight so the shear stress on the rubber is elevated. One one particular run of 200km's - this ripped over a mm of tread off the rear - across about 70% of the tyre. I.e not just on the middle.

I run my tyres hard in general - normally 3-5 psi over book in summer. It's a happy medium.

The problem I believe is that the tyres simply don't shed heat as fast as they pick it up if they're pushed hard on our rods and our temp's - so they get progressively hotter - to the point they eventually boil the oil out and then degrade.

Nope no pic's - After one shredding trip - I went to my tyre place and said - change'em. I don't have a cellphone so no cellphone cam.

After 7500 miles my rear tire is toast, I have also noticed a small amount of cupping on the front.

I ordered up the Bridgestone Exedra Max for the rear and the Avon Cobra for the front.

The Service manager at The Triumph shop told me that since the tires have different tread patterns the bike would feel weird, he likened it to wearing two different shoes

Is there any truth to this?
Have those of you you who are running this tire combination noticed any unusual handling?

Personally I don't mix tires. The manufacture doesn't recommend it either. Sure you can do it.

I am not an engineer, but I suspect that there may be more opportunity for heat build up on a tyre at 85+ mph over two hours in 112F temperatures than there is on a tyre at 160 mph for one second at 85F

What manufacturer? They all advise against mixing tire types, such as and especially bias plys and radials, but I can't recall specific advisories about mixing the same type of tires involving two different brands and/or tread patterns. Of course, every manufacturer under the sun would always prefer that you buy more of their product than any others'. There are front and rear tire tread pattern differences on some matched sets of motorcycle tires, BTW, so i'm unclear about what you are warning against, cjhbubba.

Sounds very interesting indeed. I believe the handling improvement you speak of was most likely from the change in size and not the tire itself.
I need more dope. At Avon tires I get nothing from a Azaro search.

humm possible but I doubt a few millimeters would really change the feeling on the handlebar anyway it is just nice that is all I care for
also I read avon azaro could be in short supply!! not at revzilla , so if you want some spare tires that is where you should look I just ordered a bridg max and a azaro $361 for the two decent price for our mean machine of course they do not deliver across the northern border so I will pick them up in oroville and pay the duty the tax etc etc from our friendly border gov employees .when are they going to tax the air we breathe.... should happen sooner than later the way things are going..I know I know ,

On what public road can someone sustain 120-160 km/h for 2 hours - or rather 2 full tanks of fuel (I presume with at least one stop to refuel). Even if one person did it, once, it's pretty unlikely that anyone else, especially anyone not riding on the hottest, roughest roads in the world, would have the same experience.

I'm also not convinced that Spain has the hottest, hardest roads in the world or that any road user could possible give a set of tyres a harder workout than, say, a motoGP rider.

And how come the Metzler speed rating conspiracy hasn't been heard of before - and/or not acted on?
