Guys

I've been playing about with Intake Air Temps. And re-discovered (Wayne Tripp told me about this ages ago) there is a HUGE amount of hot air drawn up into side mounted air filters originating from the Radiator. I've discounted LOW SPEED temps - This is all based on numbers at 80-90mph.

With a Big open side mounted filter I've had the worst results of all - Intake Temp over 20ºC higher than Ambient.

Best has been with the RamAir stage one AND Les's OZ Claw and adding these small deflectors - 6ºC

In my case I suspect fork lowers cause SOME turbulence maybe pulling some heat into the scoop inlet - But the HUGE difference come from those two little bits of Plastic. Dropping the temps 10ºC over anything else.

Just thought you'd like the data. I have contacted RamAir so this findings can be used for the (hopefully upcoming) Stage2 setup which be a Claw/Filter/Waterbottle/Bellmouths collection (well that was the plan)

The Stage1 Ramair seals very well against the OZ-Claw amongst the lower edge (happy accident) - I suspect triple RU2780s under a claw will run hotter as they can suck up more from below. But I don't know - and as the AIT sensor is not in airflow with triples it would be hard to compare - so I wont be bothering.

The TORQUE app is your friend. I use it just for logging but ...........................

Especially if he builds in a little deflector piece to cover the gap from radiator rear

Good read Chris I wonder what the temps would be without the overflow bottle blocking the flow in the front of the filters. Either style!!!
Of course not everyone has a large plate holding a light plant in front of their air flow. I wonder if the temps would change if the air was not interrupted in front of the OZ claw scoop? Would more direct air reduce over all temps or change the route of the air coming thru the radiator some?
As for a scoop in say the front lower of the claw running to the to of the radiator could be made to look great and still not take from the OZ claw look. Heck you might be able to open the front up some more. I wish I had the skills with fiber glass to play

These are all questions I hope somebody else can look at.

I am sure that without a bottle then air will flow with greater ease into the scoop. Would not affect much an OPEN filter I doubt. Not without some SERIOUS streamlining. Bikes are mostly disasters regarding airflow.

Airflow changes around the scoop would I'm sure affect airflow into it. One day maybe I'll fit some air-tunnel type strings on things and see where air goes.
But I am not prepared to forego my wind/water shields (which also serve to fit lights) - They look big but really they're not much bigger than OEM deflectors and are in fact higher so affect airflow around the Rad' less than OEM.

Yup a scoop with lower radiator air wash shield and maybe 1" further out would blast more air in. This is "more or less" what ram-air had in mind for the stage 2 and is close to Bob-C's design.
The Scoop cannot be any further forward or it WILL hit OEM Indicators - In fact on my R3 it just does anyway.

Well on my bike the handlebar would crush it if it were higher - Or it'd be a water funnel to the engine if just cut open. And it'd be LOUD, a reason why I like the OZ-Claw because it is not.

I did think about NACA type inlets - but they're not as efficient at getting air in as not causing drag, the latter being the primary function. This from guys who design aircraft - I'm inclined to believe them. The Duct for breathing really needs to face forward.
