Now that Corbin refunded me for their crappy seat, I have decided to customize my stock seat. One feature I liked about the corbin was that it was heated.
I went to a saddle shop (for horses yeah!) and the guy says he can change the foam (better density) and put the cover back on the seat for 25$. What do I have to loose! Way better than 1280$ for the Corbin!
So here is what I have done to make my own heated seat.
MATERIALS:
--12V relay
--Relay Wiring harness
--Wires
--Electrical tape
--2 conductor connector
--Shringking tubes
--2 Push knobs
--1 switch
--Spray adhesive
--Rubber gommet
--4mm staples and a good stapler
--12v heated car seat
and a couple hours
I'm sure you already have half the materials in your garage.
Start with the car seat, being careful take it apart. I bought this one for 22$. Half price in the middle of the summer!
Keep the heating elements and everything else you may need. In this case I kept the thermostat and trashed the pressure switch (which I will keep when I do the passenger's)
Put everything apart. Get some thin cloth (in this case I used the packaging of my saddle bags) Cut 2 pieces to size, spray some adhesive and start sticking a serpentine. Once done stick the second piece of cloth on top.
Position the temperature probe somewhere you won't feel it when sitting.
You should end up with something like this.
Take the air intake part off the seat pan
Take the front part of the seat cover off and "peel off"
Drill a hole to accomodate the wiring (I chose the left side for many reasons)
You will need to shape some thin foam on top (1/2 inch light density) of the heating element and glue the element to the original foam as well so it doesn't show or shift. In my case the saddle guy will take care of that.
Re-staple the seat cover
Wire the motorcycle, I used power from fuse 3 and 8. 3 for the seat and 8 for the trigger so that the seat turns off when the key is off. In order to do that you must take the fuse box off.
I positioned the relay using good velcro (far right on the picture) since my 2 relay brackets will be used for foglights and heated grips. Made the whole harness nice using tubes, tape, shrinking tubes etc.
I followed the main harness and used the same clamps.
I positionned the switch on the left side (big mistake, if you do so and already have the accesssory socket, find another location!)
This is how it looks.

And it works!!!! You start feeling heat after 30-45 seconds and reaches it's peak temp after 2 minutes then cycles on/off.
I tested it at first and wasn't giving enough heat so I uncoiled the element from the temp switch half a turn and it did the trick.
As it is now, it cost me 35$ and heats a little more than the Corbin at LOW but reaches it's temperature much faster.
BTW this thing draws about 2 amps.
