3 fold problem - HELP

..it's the ign. switch..take it off and see if the wires have come loose or almost off from overheating..making intermittent contact probably..do the eastern beaver mod after you get that fixed first..then do the starter motor mod..

I thought I would throw a little update on here for any who are still interested. Last week I got the call that my bike was good to go. I went Wed to pick it up and they said that they just replaced the starter relay and she fired up. While I was glad that it was such a simple and cheap fix, I was a little perturbed because I had went to Napa and picked up a starter relay that didn't work. I guess I had a wrong part number or the guy at the counter just gave me the wrong one. (I took in the old one, but the replacement still wasn't right, even though it looked the same externally).

Anyway, I was going to update this thread last week, but I got very busy. So Saturday, I hopped on my bike to run some errands and...."click". Same issue. Again.

So now my bike is back in the shop and I have them looking for whatever the issue is that is causing the bike to chew up starter relays. On the bright side, I had ordered the Eastern Beaver kit and it came in Sat night, so I'll drop that off at the shop and just let them take care of that while they are in there.

Since I was the one who gave you that part number I checked to see if I gave you the right one, and it was correct. Don't understand why that one did not work since it works fine on my 05 standard, maybe the Roadster is different but I doubt it.

As far as chewing up relays, I went through that too. I noticed that the parts under the right side cover could get very hot so I wrapped the starter relay in 1/4 " closed cell foam and have not had any problems since. It will be interesting to see what the dealer comes up with in your case.

Starter mod is helpful but at the end of the day when you finish the ignition mod the issues you are having should cease.

..not necessarily..I did the eastern beaver mod before my switch went bad..(still have the original switch with no problems on an 06), but still had starting problems when the weather turned colder..after eastern beaver, I did the two battery mod, but what really 'fixed' the problem for me was doing the starter motor mod..

What was the starter motor mod again ? Do you remember the name of the tread ?

..the thread is a sticky at the beginning of this sub-board..

..make sure ya get the right one..part number 17610 I think..tdragger put some good pics along with a good post in that thread..make sure ya read it all..the numbers that powertripp put in the first post are wrong for our beasts..

Thanks for the comments guys. I will drop by tomorrow and have them put in the Eastern Beaver kit that just came in. I'll also mention the ignition switch to them and see if that helps. Hopefully we can get this thing figured out once and for all.

I just had the same problem , Starter relay, I cleaned the contacts and it started right up, bought a relay just in case and stuck it in the saddle bag. but still running after cleaning the contacts

Update - The Plot Thickens...

Ok, here is where I am with this. To start with, I figured that while the guy was in there, I might as well have him do the Eastern Beaver and the Starter Relay () mods. Yay for that - they are done!:D

I have my bike at an extremely reputable bike shop and not at the Triumph dealer because I have not been very comfortable with the way that the dealer does business with me (I have never actually seen dishonesty there, but I feel something is just off and I have been jerked around quite a bit). The reason I mention this is that the shop does not have the scan tool that helps in diagnostics, and that comes into play in a minute.

Ok, so the first time my starter went "click", the starter relay was bad. Then 3 days later, I had the same issue and thought it was chewing through the starter relays, but it turns out that it just blew the instrumentation fuse. The guy at the shop thinks in might indicate a problem with either the instrumentation or the wiring to the instrumentation, but he checked out the wiring and it seems fine. He cannot say for sure without using the scan tool unless the bike does it again while he is testing it. I may need to take it by the Triumph shop and have them use the diagnostic scanner if it doesn't repeat by the time I pick it up. Or maybe it will never happen again since I did the Starter Relay mod? Thoughts on that?

Ok, the second issue is this (and where I really need the help of the gurus here), my check engine light is on and when checked at the Triumph shop, they got a code that indicated the secondary throttle body or a wiring fault. They checked "everything" out at the time and couldn't find anything and told me that they thought the light was tripping because the butterflies had been removed and the bike was still looking for them, which is an explanation I don't buy. At the other shop, they have found that when you take the bike out and grab a handful of throttle, the bike will fall on it's face for a few moments before it gets together (does not do this if you use smooth acceleration, which I normally do). Since they do not have the scan tool, he is flying a little blind here but says that the most likely culprit would be the Secondary Throttle Position Sensor and that the bike IS telling us that there is a problem with the CEL light. His shop does not carry these for triumphs (work on mostly Harleys and Jap bikes) and he told me that I could order one and he could install it (Found this - is this right? T1245010 Triumph Throttle Position Sensor, sec.)

The other question is, he needs to know the Ohm-Meter range for this part to install it correctly. Does anyone here have that?

I know this post may be raising red flags for the readers, but I do know people who swear by the honesty and integrity of this shop. I greatly appreciate any thoughts and help.
