Hi all! Been lurking on here for a number of years now without posting. I have had a 2013 Rocket for 11 years and over 68000 miles on the odometer. When turning on can hear the fuel pump pressurize as usual and no check engine light. When I try to start bike it turns over fine but it sputters, tries to fire and immediately dies after letting off the srart. My initisl prognosis is it may possibly be the crank position sensor. Has anyone had the same symptoms and what did you find the problem to be? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you hold a little bit of throttle on will the bike stay running?
Yes. I believe I found at least part of my problem. I had the exhaust off to remove the swing arm so I could grease the drive shaft splines. I checked and I think part of the issue was I didn't have the right exhaust clamped down. After it started I let it run until the colling fan kicked on. Now for the even more fun part. . .

I checked my oil level in the tank and it was high. By high I mean an inch! Last oil change was about 500 miles ago. So I grabbed the fluid pump and pumped out around 3/4 to 1 quart of oil. The thing was the oil looked off. Had a brown look to it that looked way darker than it should have after only 500 miles. Now im thinking maybe I've got a leaking head gasket. Any thoughts on how to confirm this? Haven't checked the coolant in the radiator yet (waiting for it to cool down).

Since it's a dry sump system just checking for coolant with a sump drain plug pulled (not the oil tank drain plug) will tell you if you have a problem.

loosen the drain plugs to see if any water comes out.

Yes I did that last night on the rear sump drain plug (the one furthest from the filter). The 3 or 4 ounces I let drain looked like what came out of the oil tank. Just off colored oil, no actual water or coolant. I also noticed a few flakes of metal in the oil. Not a lot, but enough to notice.
I know I did not over fill on oil on the oil change 500 miles ago. I was thinking about pulling the radiator cap tonight and topping off the radiator. then going to check the oil level on the dipstick, let the bike idle and get good and warm for about 20 or 30 minutes. I'm then going to check the oil level again to see if there's any change. Unless someone has a better idea does this sound like a good next step?

This place is good. They can give you a lot of information about your engine you didn't even think of. Oil Analysis | Blackstone Laboratories
Thank you Rick. I appreciate the link.
