2008 r3 touring
Hi all! just bought my 2008 rocket touring and has done just over 15 k on the clock, i have done over 500km on it and has run sweet as, until i noticed that my fuel guage was reading 3/4 full after i filled her up and the digital readout only showed 50 km to refill? i thought nothing of it and rode @ 100km. next time i started it up the fuel light came on and it noticed fuel guage still had 3/4 and 5o km on the digital again, and was running fine so i went and filled up. it took only about 15 litres. istarted it up and @ 300 metres down the road it started misfiring and knocking like it was running out of fuel and died.? the fuel guage showed dead empty and the digital readout showed 0km to refill? i tried starting and would turn over but not fire, after afew attempts while turning over and heaps of throttle twists it came to life coughing and spluttering rev right up and die again, throwing out heaps of blue rich fuely smoke! this is all i have been able to get out of it, it now is with a triumph dealership and they have checked and all seems to be as it should be and are at a loss as well as emailing triumph about the issue too! the mechanic thinks it will be some silly little issue and may take time to find? i was hoping someone may have encountered this type of problem or similar, to make life quicker to solve.

G'day Andrew and welcome.
Might be an ignition switch problem (Known to be the cause of miss firing and no starts) Check the wiring to the Ign switch looking for discoloured wiring and possible lose solder connection on the Ign switch itself.
Just a guess..... But if it happens again try starting up and turning the handlebars from left to right and back (Moves the wires around).
Good Luck

thanks buddy, im riding my old harley at the mo and will be passing all this valuable info onto the mechanic as ammo to solve this. im british by nature, i have an old 75 norton commando and an 86 softail so im still riding but this new technology is a bit ****! my other bikes i can fix with tools not a laptop!? lol

It sounds like it could be your injectors, or more specifically, your ECU. There's a current recall for later model bikes (whole range of different triumphs) due to ECMs sending incorrect signals to injectors causing them to dump fuel into the engine. This results in coughing and spluttering, engine stopping and lots of blue smoke as unburnt fuel hits the hot exhaust. Your bike won't be covered by the recall but it could be the same problem. I hope it's not the case though; ECUs cost around $3000.

i hope not too! but the mechanic, done full diagnostic and all checks ok? i have been looking at other threads and this tps issue comes up a few times, i need enlightening!

The Primary TPS is the probable culprit. Make sure that it is set CORRECTLY. If the bike then starts, but the problem returns, then you will need to replace the TPS with one of the new ones. Despite what the manual says, replacing the TPS and setting it correctly can be easily done in less than 30 minutes.

Another thing to check is the Crank Position Sensor. Easy to take out and clean and then put back.

It could also be the wiring on the ignition switch. It is not as big a problem on the R3T as you have only one headlight, but you should check it and you should also fit an Eastern Beaver kit. This will take a load of the switch wiring, and also give you brighter headlights.

hi
just a thought some of the guys have said that they have overfilled their tanks and just a little ways down the road the motor starts missing. I don't know if they ride touring or not. might try removing some fuel and see what happens.
from what you are saying sounds like your fuel sensor (inside the tank) is bad and needs changing.
