Help me out guys. Hate to start a new thread but I'm kind of in a hurry between taking care of the wife and work and all. I think I might actually get to make the Maggie Valley trip. Maybe. Problem is, I have 10,000 miles on the oil and can't get to the dealer in time to get it taken care of. I should know how to change the oil in the beast but I have never serviced the engine on this bike so Im cautious. I've searched the threads figured this is a faster route. Can anyone point me to a how-to to help me out? I can get the service done when I get back. I've seen the threads on everyone's favorite oils, etc. I'm gonna run down to Oreilly's and get an oil filter and get this show on the road.
 
You have 3 plugs under the engine that you have to drain I believe if u have the owners manual that it shows u the location if not and no one else answer I will look it up when I get home a post a pix for u and if I remember right it takes 5.5 qts
 
yes there are three plugs the 3 bigger ones dont lose the copper washers warp had a pic of the three I have only done it once but it is easy
 
Go to youtube someone has a video on how to do it. You will have two plugs by the kick stand and one up at the front. Do not loose the washers and do not knick the oring on the one by the stand.

They are standard right hand threads but can be quite stubborn to undo. Remember you are upside down, ccw rotation.
 
Thanks guys! You all gave me some good pointers and then some. My only issue was refilling and start up because the oil tank had me wondering. My old v star had a dry sump system with an external tank where you poured in some oil, started it up, and then poured in the rest. My Valk was easy just like a car. I will download the manual when I get home. I ain't afraid of it! I just have to decide on which oil to go with now. Ran Rotella in the Valk. May go that way.

Just some important points:

Run the engine for a few minutes so that the pumps can scavange oil up to the tank.

Remove the main drain (center one) to drain the tank in short order. It's not supposed to do it but some oil could drain back down to the pan if you wait too long.

The crush washers can be reused a few times so don't get too anal about changing them out now.

When refilling, pour in 5 qts. put the cap back on the tank and start the engine. Run it for a few minutes and shutdown.

IMPORTANT: Stand the bike upright (sit on it or chocks...) and check the oil level. Add as necessary.

A Mobil M1-108 is an exact replacement oil filter. The M1-110 is the same diameter but about an inch longer. The chrome filter cover won't go all the way over it but it's not noticeable. Plus you get a little additional filter area.
 
You don't have to worry about oil draining back. That is why there are two sump drain plugs too to make sure all the old oil drains out.
