Something leaking

Smells like gas. I placed cardboard under the bike in the morning and at lunch time there was a spot. I flipped the board and at 4:00 PM there was no new spot. So the theory of it being heat related stacks up but I still can't figure out why (the tank was not totally full).
What is the evap canister mentioned?

Cheers

The gas tank vents out there too. Very common for fuel to come out of there. Moving my bike from the shade in my garage out into the drive in the sun would cause it to do the same thing. On the California bikes there is a carcoal canister that hose connects to.

Your tank doesnt have to be full to the brim for this to happen..........its just a relief for the expansion but not in the sense of there being too much gas for the tank (although that applies to). Its more for pressure to release and not build up.......also the evap canister is an emisions thing that the state of california requires to keep pollution low.....its overkill and they have an issue with smog in that state.

There are two lines that can have gasoline come out of them, one is the evap canister that comes from a vent in the tank and the other is from the overflow ring around the filler neck.
Raw fuel is typical of splashing gas while filling the bike and it comes from that overflow ring area. It's possible the inner cap seal is not seating properly and fuel sloshes into the ring while riding, but that's not typical.

Overfilling the tank also allows raw gas into the vent tube that leads to the evap canister. Having raw gas come out of that tube would mean the charcoal inside the evap can is saturated and isn't typical either.

Both possibilities are usually the result of overfilling the tank, if that's the case try not filling the bike too full. If the evap can does have alot of gas saturating the charcoal inside, it will take awhile for it to dry up.

Unless there is something wrong, that's my best guess. Hope it takes care of itself and you don't have a problem. Good luck.

Mine does this.On a hot day you can get down on your knees and see the fumes venting out.
It doesnt happen all the time,I suspect it is something to do with the temperature of the fuel when its bought.
Cooled fuel takes up less space and when you leave the bike in the sun it expands more than fuel that was already warmish when filled.

Occasionally, you may also get a drop or 2 of oil coming from one of the hoses

The evap canisters are a world wide requirement and have been in most developed countries for 30 years.

has your bike got one!! because there isn't one on mine and as far as I know the aussie bikes don't have one and the Cat is just a resonater no catalist in there just a restriction to be gotten rid of:D

The Road Warrior was set in the future and I didn't see any emission controls on his Ford Falcon XB Coupe with the blown 351 either. The southern hemisphere seems less stringent on those kind of things. (I wanna move there) LOL

To be honest I havent looked. I thought I saw it in the workshop manual and assumed it would be there.
I thought they had to have one to collect the hydrocarbons from tank fumes under the ADR.

We use to be behind on those things once upon a time but now everything is Euro something or another.

I would move here,Max's world sounds more appealing than when the apes takeover in the USA and start doing lobotomies on humans.:D
