I went in to my local Triumph dealer and asked how much it would cost to hard wire my GPS and he said that I need to get him the plug for my GPS so he can use it has the wire, he said $135.00 to do it I thought that was a lot?
How hard would it be? or should I just pay to get it done? at least it would work

I did mine some weeks ago, the lead was supplied, all I needed was an inline fuse holder £1 (<$2) and connect to the battery. $135 (£100) seems mighty steep to me.

I wired it up myself. Anyone can do it if I can. Pretty straight forwards stuff. Wired mine to an Eastern Beaver PC8.

Under the tank are heated grip and clock plugs that you could splice into for juice. I used the heated grip plug for my Autocom.

Do it yourself. $135 is a rip off. It takes longer to raise tank and route wires than to hook it up. If the leads are long enough just hook straight to battery (unswitched power - this has been argued before) with a fuse on hot side.

If you can tell red from black and + from - you can do it.

Gps

ok so the wire that goes with my GPS if I cut the adator off is there ends that I can buy that I could hook up to battery? Do I need to lift the tank? could I just get the wire at the under the side off tank to the battery and hook it up?and bring the other end up with my gauges where my GPS is ? that would save a lot of work instead of lifting the tank?
What's in a inline fuse? Do I need that? And if so where does that fuse go?I thought that was expensive but it does not seen to hard to do.

Lifting the tank is easy, if you haven't done it before now is a good time to try. Just read the instructions in your owners manual. When you lift the tank you will see why we say "lift the tank" and run the wires from your GPS straight into your battery (maybe a slight detour around the air filter housing top). Radio Shack or any auto parts store sells the fused link. Just tape it or solder it, wrap it in tape or heat shrink inline with the wire from the GPS. That obviously will go on the red / positive side of the battery, the black wire straight to the negative post. You could also buy a fuse block and attach it to the positive side of the battery as well.

It is pretty easy to do...get your feet wet and don't look down.

the GPS adapter probably has a voltage reducer from 12V to 5V in it, so just cutting it off and hardwiring to 12V power source may damage your GPS beyond repair.

Depending on your make of GPS, they sell hard wire kits for motorcycles with the inline fuse and voltage reducer built right in. The milliamp draw is so small for these, you could tap into any 12V source, such as inside the headlight shell, without having to raise the tank or run wires all the way to the battery. I prefer to wire to a fuse block rather than having all the connections on the battery, but if you're not adding other accessories like the Stebel horn or aftermarket driving lights, then the fuse block would be overkill.

Let me know the make of your GPS and I'll look up a few links for the wiring kits. My advice, do it right and do it once. The price you were quoted is ridiculous....the wiring kit is maybe $40 and an hour of your time at most.

Yeah, the method I used was for the Garmin Zumo 550. It came with the wiring harness and I just wired it direct to the battery. The fuse block is a good idea if you have more than one item to hook up to the battery.

Its a Garmin nuvi 780,
I have a plug on my battery for my heated gloves and I have a plug on the side of my bike that I use to plug in my heated vest but the adapter is smaller. I know I could get another adapter that plugs in that will become bigger so my adapter for my GPS would then fit but then I wouldn't be able to use my heated vest. If needed at the same time thats why I would like to hard wire it.
This might sound so easy for you guys but Im not mechanical or technical. I'm so far away from that, Im only good with my hands to renivate my house, upholstery or make spoilers
I don't really want to take my tank up because my gauges are so low I would need to loosen my handle bars so my gauges will lift up and then I could pull my tank off.
With my luck I wouldn't tighten the handle bars good enough and going around the corner they will fall down and there I go
I like the idea of hooking up to my head lights. I do have fog lights, I could see where theyre hooked up. Could I hook my GPS to that? or would that dim my fog lights?
Would anyone come do it for me for $85.00 and some beer
Could I get the fuse I need some where other then Triumph? If there is a kit that I can get with step by step instruction I might be ok then
