Take a look at this excellent YouTube video of a Rocket 111 fork seal replacement. At the 10.27 min mark this fellows shows how he orients the seal. He places the spring down. I followed this video to replace mine a year ago with no problems.

i have been working with seals since 1966 so i know seals and what happens when they fail. it cost me a lot of money much more than a $12.00 seal
so regarding the the seal in the video
first of all if it only has one spring that spring goes up so it can seal the gear oil.
if it has a place for a spring then you can use the old one if it is not damaged
as i recollect the seals i have bought had two springs
with it installed like in the video when it gets good and hot then it is probably going to leak.

I beleive the spring goes inside. If you can see the spring, it is installed wrong. At least that how I have always done it. 54 plus years of home wrenching. With the spring side inside you get the pressure of the fork oil pushing against the seal and spring to keep the lip of the seal tight against the fork tube.
That's the way I've always installed seals, spring in, but for some reason my Rocket had the springs out from the factory. They originally lasted over 10 years and 75k without leaking so I installed them the same way. The Youtube video I just posted shows the old seals in the Rocket being serviced with the springs out??? Why??? This goes against everything I was ever taught and practised in the trade but... we'll see. I may have to eat crow and do them again... Now you guys have me questioning myself. lol

Triumph rocket Seals have spring on both sides, only 1 side will recieve the seal driver, its obvious and it goes out away from oil, picture 2 with WRITING on seal goes away from oil. Picture 3 of seal is obviously different and goes toward oil.

Have rechecked the seals again after removing the retaining clips on both seals I think that both seals are installed correctly, both were replaced 2 years ago as stated earlier after the L/H seal started leaking and this side is still ok. I think Im just unlucky that the R/h seal has failed in a very short time. both seals were genuine Triumph seals.

Those nice clear close up photos are good. Yes they look installed correctly. Have you tried the seal cleaning tool yet ? They have actually work worked for me on my Rocket and on my Tiger 900 GT after sitting over a winter. You can make one out of a 6 oz yogart cup or something simular that is nicely round and thin.
