Rocket 3 speedo not working.

hi. now i've got everything but speedo going. rpm ok.all lights ok on cluster, just speedo arrow is stuck on 9mph. found blown fuse, not sure how i've missed it last time. :) p1500 code still present. any ideas?
thank you all

I had similar problem.
Does odometer work and register miles?
Does trip meter work and reset?

Finally traced problem to the NEEDLE magnet failed and was blowing a fuse. Odd, but it would send electric info to harness and pop the fuse.
The speedo kept perfect miles on ODO. ODO held with blown fuse, but trip meter failed to hold info with fuse failure.
The sending unit seemed to be fine but the needle would not operate correctly and I wanted to see the speed.
80 MPH at 2K rpm and then 30 MPH at 2k rpm. too annoying. Since they used to be mechanical and now they are electro-mechanical and NO sub-parts are avaikable I just didn't have the patience.
I considered disassembly (I had done it before on a Honda 10 years prior) but after I negotiated with the local dealer, we decided he would sell the speedo for his cost if that fixed it. "Test known good and replace". I have a good guy for the local dealer. Third triumph bought there. etc.

Magnet?

I'd take a wild guess that the needle is driven directly by a stepper motor - I've not stripped a triumph speedo - but I've stripped others. If there's a short (though very odd and rare) in the stepper motor - that would blow a fuse.

If the stepper motor has gone consider a new speedo as pretty much a must. Opening it up to change a motor MIGHT work if you can find a motor to fit - but sealing it again after is prone to water seepage.

That or look at after market solutions - as per Cryian and the Dakota-Digital or the KOSO stuff as suggested by Wayne Tripp. That or a MotoGadget PRO unit.

I'm messing about with KOSO stuff for AUXILIARY GPS sensor driven speedos ( I have managed to get a rev counter to read off km/h correctly ) . Cheaper than most. In the UK http://digitalspeedos.co.uk/

Be wary of using non-bike-specific speedos (VDO/SMITHS etc.). They can be made to work perfectly well - but generally are NOT water proof.

Magnets were used in the old cable drive speedos. I'll agree to stepper motor or whatever. Something to change the electronic pick up on the tranny to convert to the mechanical indicator (needle).
My point, if electronic (ODO is registering miles, and the needle is F'ed, then you'll need to replace.
Finding a replacement part for the innards of the speedo would be tough if not impossible.
My rocket kept blowing the fuse until I replaceed the speedo unit.
Now all is well.
Electronic failure...

Yup - I sort of assumed that's what you meant. But one likes to be thorough.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. Bishop stopped by to do a diagnostic with his TuneBoy software but suggested I disconnect the battery cables from the battery first, wait a few minutes to let the ECU reset itself and recognize the instruments and then reconnect. It worked. It is worth giving a try.

hi. thanks for your help. would any of them work off present wiring? i meed would i need extra sensors or calibrating?
thanks

Option 1

Option 2

Most after-market Electronic speedos have the facility to be calibrated to existing sensor/ECU pulses. Many also have a self calibration option (you need a satnav or something to help you ride at a set speed). I tend to measure the tyre and work out how many pulses per mile I need to program in.

Jon at digital-speedos in the UK will be able to give you lots of advice ime. He's obviously interested in sales, but he gave me some very straight advice a couple of years ago. Also as they offer a specific Temperature gauge for Rockets - he may know a bit more about them than most - and may be up for the challenge of offering a solution - he does one for V-Max's. He does several makes. MotoGadget is one and they offer a special "breakout box" for Triumphs - though I think an R3 needs just a normal one. Jon will know.
