Do you think you can go 10,000 miles w/out an oil change on the Touring like they say, or is that only for ideal conditions? If you didn't hit 10K miles by the winter rolling around, but you hit the 1 year point, would you change the oil just before winter (at 1 year) or wait 'til spring so the new oil doesn't sit in the cold most of the winter (no garage)?

In our conditions here in the mid-Atlantic region, the 10k interval is doable. However, if you are not reaching 10k per year, a change in late fall is better. I'm not an expert but I understand that used oil collects minute acid particles and left to sit over the winter can allow the acid to work on the internals. Fresh oil would be best for setting in the winter. my 2c.

Your 2 cents are very much appreciated. Makes sense. See you in the Smoky Mts soon! Fish

Never store a motor with used oil-always fresh, and no cheating! Oil holds all kinds of stuff including acids which are all byproducts of combustion.
Triumph did a lot of research on oil as do all OEM's so 10,000 is safe BUT severe service will shorten the time/miles ratio. In the long run, oil is cheap and is the single most important compontant to a healthy stock engine.

Ok, sounds like you all agree, change the oil at 10k, or if I don't hit 10k by year 1, I'll change it before winter rolls around. I bought her in the fall and I have 4,000 now, so I seriously doubt I'll get 10K by winter but you never know. I changed the oil before the winter last year at around 1k miles. Appreciate the advice. Been riding for 20 years and got that down, but still don't know a lot of the technical stuff. Makes perfect sense... Fish

speaking of Maggie Valley, I'm heading out about 6 am Friday morning to meet up with BobbyK in Lynchburg around 9 am. We plan on riding down US 29 to Greensboro and then over to Maggie Valley. What is your plan?

You mean next Friday right, the 8th? Fish

I would never go 10k on a new motor without an oil change.

If I were going to store a vehicle through a season, I would change the oil before I put it up. When I'm ready to ride, I"d change the oil again.

I would also fog it but that's a habit I developed from being a boat owner.

Hey, Juggernaut, just to be clear, I changed the oil at 1,000 miles after I broke her in this fall. I'm at 4,000 now. I'll change the oil before winter, but the oil is really expensive. The bike did ok, as far as I can tell, after the 1st oil change and sitting most of the winter, though I rode it on nice days. It's doing fine, unless there something going on inside I don't know about.

You're not using the Triumph branded oil are you?

Just go to your local hardware store and get a good synthetic of the same viscosity.

That Triumph oil is Mobil 4T I believe, and yeah, it's expensive.

Yeah, I think that's it, very expensive. Is that what was originally used on yours or is it just the touring? What can I use, got a brand/type?
