I have been looking and waiting to see if anyone would come out with a quick release sissy bar for the Rocket. I like to remove the sissy her when it's just me and put it on the wife is on board or I need to carry extra luggage. Well it's seem like a cold day in hell before I find one so F---it, I'm going to make one.

It will have to meet the following criteria for it to be suitable.

  • Remove and install with no tools or just 1 tool you can fit in your pocket.
  • Be removed and installed in less than 1 minute.
  • Retain the mounting system for my saddlebags fitted with easy brackets.
  • Strong and good looking suiting the profile of the bike.
  • Non corroding parts where possible
So stay tuned and if successful I will make my idea's, drawings etc available to all that would like them.
I already have a couple of designs, so it's just choosing one.

Now off to the shed!

count me as a contributing member!! I have a solid back rest and I would love to get a quick detach sissy bar I had one my harley before and it worked perfectly take a look at the way it clicks in and clicks off simple and sturdy maybe you can adapt something from it..( Ibelieve there was only one model from HD )

Just a suggestion ..you might want to take a ride down to your local Harley dealer and check out the new detachable sissy bar set ups they just came out with. My buddy just bought a wide glide with a one on it. I didn't really get a good look at it but it was a lot different than than the earlier models..

Did look at them but they leave an ugly docking bracket behind. I want it to remain as clean as possible.

It would be good if you could use the components of the stock sissy bar and design a quick release bracket system? I would certainly be in the market for that, it's an absolute pain to switch mine over as the bolt holes are slightly out of alignment and I have crossed the thread a couple of times

Good luck with your build....

I have now come up with my design and had to compromise on 1 of my criteria, and that is I will need 2 allen keys to remove and install the sissy bar.
It is still quick release and needs less than 1 minute to remove and install.

I have based my design around the docking posts for the Easy Bracket system as that 's how my saddlebags attach.
Even if you don't have the easy brackets you can still make the docking posts and they will be a little shorter as well (9mm).

The photo below shows the original easy bracket docking post with 1 x 3mm wide groove machined into it,

This photo shows the newly machined docking post with the 3mm wide groove on the outside and the newly machined 5.75mm wide groove on the inside to take the sissy bar bracket.

As you can see below the new post is actually made in 2 pieces so the sissy bar bracket can be slid onto the post.
The idea behind this is you loosen the docking post bolt 1 turn, then slip the sissy bar bracket in and tighten the docking post bracket back with 1 turn.
Because the sissy bar bracket will be 6mm thick and the groove in the docking post is 5.75mm it will clamp up nice and tight.

Here is a photo of the new docking post fitted to the bike.

Shortly I will post up the sissy bar bracket design and how it fits onto the docking posts.
I mentioned earlier I needed 2 tools and these were a 8mm and 6mm allen key as the front docking post bolt is 10mm and the rear docking post bolt is 8mm.

Stay tuned all will be revealed.

I have designed the bracket and am currently cutting them out.

The front mount is slotted horizontally to stop any up and down movement and the rear mount is slotted vertically to stop any movement horizontally.

Once cut I will have to bent them to shape clean them up and have them chromed.
