Question about the relative loudness of different exhausts

Hi all,

I've recently moved on from Valkyries and am the proud new owner of a (lightly!) used rocket.

A lot of the extras the bike had are what I'd put on by default (air horn, plate relocation, tinted fly screen, etc). It also came with both the stock and the D&D 3-2 pipes, and the D&Ds are what's on the bike.

I've not heard a rocket with the stock pipes. I really like the look of the jardines. The problem is, I tend to go against the grain and prefer as quiet a bike as possible. I don't like to wear earplugs ever, and if I am out riding all day, I really don't want my ears ringing at the end of the day.

Is it fair to say that in terms of decibels, stock < D&Ds < jardines? Is that true? Can anyone compare the loudness of the jardines to the D&Ds? And last and maybe quirkiest of all, if the jardines are really louder than the rest, is there any way to get that look, even if I sacrifice some of the power? Any advice or comments greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
paul

Nice to see you here npr... the Valk is a really great bike, few here have both, I would love one also 8) ... anyway, I ride with the tors and a flyscreen and to be honest he noise of the pipes does not bother me at all.. the wind noise through my helmet is another question though.. :?

TOR pipes only: Waste of money
Cat Bypass Only: Relatively louder
Cat& Tors: Relatively louder
Staintune: Relatively louder
D&D's: Relatively Louder
Jardines: Relatively louder.

Everything's relative lmao!

Thats true. I have the D & D's. I was at the dealers last week and a customer left his bike the for some upgrades. He drove off on a stock loaner. After he left I asked the dealer to start his bike so I could hear the Jar's......I couldn't believe the difference between the three of them!!!

npr - welcome to the forum.

If you wanted to sell your D&D's to fund the Staintunes or whatever, send Gasket a pm - he's after a set.

Paul the only other 3-2 system out there worth anything is Travel guys predator exhaust which noise levels can somewhat be adjusted buy the use of the diffusion disc's that go with the supertrap exhaust. I went from stock to stock with cat by-pass 20226 tuneboy tune, then I went to by-pass with TORS and a 20050-2 modified tuneboy tune (fattened up lower fuel tables) to eliminate decel popping that comes with Triumph's tune . I wanted to keep the triple pipes to go with the inline triple motor, the TORS are throatier than stock and you can tell a little bit more torque is there. After running the Tors for a while now 3000 miles I must admit I agree with you about the quiet thing so I got to say I liked the cat bypass and stock pipes sound the best sporty yet not to loud. I am waiting on a price quote from Richard and when I put his supercharger on I will think about the small power loss and switch back to the stock pipes no cat and have it tuned on the dyno in fact I probably will spend the cash and have it on the dyno with stock and then TORS and keep both tunes stored for what ever noise level mood I am in. I think the quieter exhaust will allow more turbine sound from the blower kind of like hearing the gear drive on my 70 super Sport.
If you haven't invested in a tuneboy yet I would recommend you do that before you do any other engine mods. I haven't had mine long so I have a lot to learn but I love the fact that it takes about a minute to change tunes and as long as people share tunes you can do a lot of testing to see what you like. I am surprised that this site does not have a trading tunes forum to go too, who knows as much as this site has grown since I registered I am sure it will probably be developed. Anyway I have strained your eyes long enough enjoy the new Torque Monster between your legs.
You will find a lot of knowledgeable captains on this site. :D

Wow, thanks all - that's a lot of good information to go think about. If it's not too late, I'll try and convince the missus to head up to Tahoe in mid July so we can check out what other people have done, and maybe come to some decision. Thanks for the great information and advice!
