output shart bearing replacement info

Done had that apart, cleaned and lubed the splines, checked the wheel bearings, looked for anything else that may be causing it while I was in there, all was good.

I've had the clutch springs and lifter piece replaced twice, still have the lifter piece you located for me about a year ago, keeping it in case I'll be needing it. I have a whirling, grinding noise coming from the OSB area while decelerating, low rpm's 12-1800 rpm in all gears, that's the only time I hear anything, all the gears are good though. I'm planing on pulling the sump pan and flushing things out, change oil, filter, etc.

My R3 was making a sound exactly like everyone was describing as a failed OSB. It ended up being a badly warped rear rotor, that was scrubbing the inside of the caliper. It too was only audible at low speeds. Just my 3.1426571 cents worth.

Thanks for the input, I checked that also, I did forget to mention that with the noise there is a pretty bad vibration also, you can actually feel it in the shifter

Sounds like your diagnosis is probably spot on then. The Triumph mechanic I spoke to here in Michigan says they pull the swing arm, disconnect everything from the engine that doesn't flex and then lift the rear of the bike leaving the front motor mount connected.

That's what I was planing on doing, some say it's a 20 hr job, some say they've done in 12 hrs, guess it depends on how much experience you have as a mechanic, just wondering if I need any special tools. I can't wait to get this repaired, I really need a good road trip.

You might want to consider buying the update kit if you are going to this much trouble. The kit comes with a new casting which supposedly has different oilways for improved lubrication to the OSB. Also comes with some new bits for the gearbox which vastly improves shifting. I had my bearing replaced under warranty only to have it fail again then had the update kit installed by the dealer and no problems since. Much nicer shifting and smooth as silk. Don't forget to check the oil pump too as crap from the bearing breaking up can get in there.
Rereading your original post you mention silver motor so maybe you have ordered the kit?

I'm not sure what all comes with the kit but I do know that a new casting, bearing, gasket, is coming with it.

The output bearing on some early 04 / 05 models is starved of oil because the oil way drillings are small and there is a seal in the output bearing on one side and it is installed back to front I am told.

From Memory my Kit had

Output Bearing
Engine Bearing Casing with larger oil feed drillings
2nd gear assy
Timing chain guides/tensioner
Ignition Coils
Iradium Spark Plugs
Gaskets - Oil seals
I think thats most of it..

Also Rear Wheel Drive spline can make noises if it is not properly greased I believe,,

output bearing shaft

I am at the same stage as you seeya I have removed sump and clutch cover i found piece of a bearing cage in there my bike has 60,000 very hard miles on it and had the upgrade kit fitted at 3500miles
I am going to try and do job without removing engine first let me know how you get on I will be posting on other site as well
