I just picked this bike up last week from the dealership, it had 7 miles on it. After getting it home and a few short easy rides, I noticed what appeared to be oil leaking down the oil pan side of the engine. From what I can tell it looks like it is leaking from behind and above the oil pan and coming from the engine block. There appears to be a seal just down from the top of the engine block and it appears to be leaking from there. There is not a lot of leakage, but definately enough to cause concern. I have been keeping an eye on the oil level and it really has not changed. It appears to me that the oil level may be high. With the bike level and checking the dip stick, the oil level is well above the top line. Could the dealership have put too much oil in the bike and therefore the excess is above this seal line? I am going to remove some of the oil to the proper level and see if the leaking stops. Anyone see/heard of this? Thanks.....

Welcome to the site mate
It could be the crap they spray on the engines from new or if its not that try tightening up the bolts on the oil tank a little
Cheers

yeah I heard theres some wax of some sort, that melts & runs off a newie.. Clean the bike with a good truck wash & see if it's all gone next ride.

I highly suspect it's cosomolene melting and running down the side of the head/crankcase. I had the same issue with my '08 Classic; just wipe it up and eventually it's going to stop.

Thanks for the input all, I am hoping that it is the cosmoline and it will eventually quit, I have heard of this before. I 'll keep on eye on the oil level, clean the engine off and wait it out for a bit.

Welcome to the site welcome to the world of cosmolene. The same happened with my 07. You just might check with your dealer though to be sure. The dealer in Florida where I bought mine said that Triumph was going to discontinue its use and instead wrap the bikes for shipment. The dealerships were all complaining to Triumph that removing the gunk cost a lot in labor.

I am def going to keep an eye on it and take it to my closest dealership if it doesn't stop. I doubt the dealership that I bought it from did much to remove the cosmoline based on the way they filled the oil pan. My oil level was a good inch above the max line on the dip stick. I removed almost 16 oz. of oil and it is still slightly above the max line. And yea I checked the oil consistently while the bike is level. So if that indicates their attention to the details, then I'm fairly sure they didn't do much to clean off the cosmoline. Thanks.....By the way this is my second R3, I owned an 06 and traded in for a new 09 so I could transfer over all my goodies and jardines.

Had the same thing on my 07 classic, been in the shop 2 years only 12 miles on it when I bought it last Nov, oil leaking from under the oil tank took it back stripped out the oil tank all looked good put it back together and no more leak! not sure what it was but real happy it's done

If it's not the cosmolene then you need to re-seat the oil tank o-rings - had that problem when I first bought '06 Classic

check the consistency of the fluid when it dries (when the engine is cold). If it's slightly tacky, it's nothing to worry about. It's cosmolene...

It's cosmolene, by god!
It's the smell of the very essence of life itself !!!!
