Oil Change. First report in!!!

I changed out the bevel box oil shortly after I bought the bike. It had 2000 miles on it at the time and I was glad I did as it looked filthy and the magnetic plug had some sludge attached.

I sprayed out the inside of the bevel box with brake cleaner, and blew it out with compressed air and left it overnight to make sure it was completely dry.

I changed it again 1000 miles later and it looked MUCH better, not clear but not black like the first time I changed it and no sludge stuck to the magnet.

I just changed it again along with my engine oil and it was nearly clear I plan to change it and the engine oil every 5000 miles. I am 100% with you on this one. For as cheap as it is there is no reason to have the same crap in there for multiple riding seasons.

The good thing about all this is there's no downside for the motorcycle. It might be better, can't be worse, and you're only out a $10 filter. I have a suspicion if you had the oil tested halfway through, that's probably what they'd say… no need to do that, but it definitely won't hurt if you want to!

Fully agree with the comment about "regular filter changes, extended oil changes", so long as you confirm that your oil is still good, especially the viscosity, hence the need for a quality synthetic.

Regarding the desire to change out a filter 2x as often, just remember that the best filtration takes place just before the filter plugs (the more you use it, the better it gets). Now that doesn't mean that you leave it there forever. It will eventually plug and bypass the oil around the filter media. That's why filter suppliers and engine manufacturers suggest when to replace the filter. They've done the math. Having said all this, a new premium filter still gives excellent filtration when new so if you want to change 2x more often, spend your money and have fun.

So here we are several months later and I have 9600 miles on the clock. 5000 miles on the oil in the crankcase with the reusable oil filter.

As stated before I replace the bevel box of oil at the 5000 mile intervals well. It's probably overkill as you can see how clean it comes out but it's cheap insurance in my opinion.

I drain the engine oil and I have to say I came out pretty darn black.

I was happy to see that the magnetic drain plug and a little magnet on the inside of my reusable oil filter had minimal grey sludge on it.

In the meantime, I'm going to run a regular K&N oil filter for 5000 miles.

At the end of the 5000 miles on them to send that oil in as well and see what Blackstone laboratories has to say. I figured it will be interesting for all of us to see a comparison between a reusable oil filter and a contemporary paper oil filter.

That's a little container to Blackstone send you to send in your sample with. By the way that's mobile one synthetic after 5000 miles. Looks dirty as hell Not quite jet Black but definitely looks worth changing.

Had some 'other guys insurance' work done when he knocked me off. Simple few parts replacement.
Their shop did have a few down to the block (not R3's) and the owner professed to have Rocket experience.
However one of the techs did install my fuel level float assembly backwards.
Found it after I got home, 100 miles away and fuel gauge was still full... thought 'either the mileage on this thing is wayyyyy up or.....'

I would not let them clowns take my trash out much less work on my bike. That makes three people i know of that have had their fuel gauge float installed incorrectly. They also do a wonderful valve job just ask Mexican.

UPDATE!!!!

First oil report in.

Bottom line up front.

My reusable oil filter appears to be performing quite well acording to this report.

Unfortunately my riding has been Reduced to virtually zero shortly after I changed the oil due to a torn up ankle and fractured leg. Fortunately it was not a motorcycle accident. It was a jiu Jitsu training accident.

I currently have a K & N oil filter in the bike. I plan to run it for 5000 miles and see the difference in the lab results.

Hopefully I’ll be back riding in another 4 to 6 weeks.

Thoughts and comments most welcome.
