Monte and I finished our Iron Butt ride on Sunday morning. We started on Saturday morning at 0515 leaving BETO Junction Kansas (40 miles south of Topeka) and rode to Byer Colorado. The temperatures were a bit balmy because I became balmy near Limon and had to get off the bike or crash. Monte was a life saver, he gave me some of his Gatorade and gave me a cool wrap (gel neck wrap). Once I was no longer woozie we made the rest of the ride. I made it home at 0200 Sunday. The bike was flawless, the road less so. If you like being slow roasted I recommend +100 degree days and brand new blacktop to get that over-under cooking feature. It's like riding in a waffle iron. The heat pounds you from above and below, you can't get away from it. At our stop in Burlington Coilorado on the return leg Monte was a shade of red I didn't know you could achieve without being on fire. I was concerned. Monte is a Native American but he was the reddest Red Man I've ever seen. After drinking a bottle of Gatorade followed by two Gatorade bottles of water, soaking his beanie in water and standing under the air conditioner in the travel store for 30 minutes he was almost normal colored (what passes for normal for Monte anyway). Our stops were longer than the plan called for just to survive. In Waukeeney Kansas the travel store Jumbo Tron showed the time 7:29 PM as we were leaving and the temperature was 114 degrees. Darn glad it had moderated by then.
