Now it won't start, what happened?

...Would a marginal battery cause the tach needle to NOT sweep when the ignition is turned on?...
In my experience, with a cold soaked and dimminshed battery charge, the tach sweep still goes along with the speedo sweep.

Tighten your battery connections. The 5 second crank then nothing leads me to this assumption.

So you replaced your handlebars did you. The 5 second crank could in fact have been a 5 second burn. Pinched and burnt and now grounded wire??

Put some dielectric grease in those empty sockets and let 'em hang.

BTW, I purchased an upgraded battery (310CCA) after only a year on the original. The new battery also suffered from cold soaking over a weekend of sitting, with overnight temps down into the 20s. I don't have the luxury of a heated den to pamper the fat bottom girl with. I could roll the beast out into the sun and after a few hours with 40 degree warmth it would fire right up. Or a ten minute charge at 10 amps would do it and I wouldn't be late for work on Monday. PS. The old battery was deemd serviceable. Just cold hearted.

The only thing I did for the wire bundles (tach/speedo and left handlebar switch bundle) was to move them slightly to remove and reinstall the left side sterring head plastic cover. This needs to be done for clutch/throttle cable installation. I don't think there was any issue there.

I will re-check the battery terminal connections (clean, loosen, re-tighten, etc) and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks

I know this might sound crazy but I had the same problem with the tac and netural light. It was traced back to a fuse for the heated grips. I replaced it every thing worked normal. I would check your fuses.
`

Good suggestion. My first move was to check ths fuses located in the fuse box beside the battery. They all appeared to be okay. Are there some other fuses that are located somplace else?

and the winner is...........

YOU WIN!

I come home tonight and went right out into the garage. I was about to remove the tach/speedo to begin checking that the plugs in the back of them was secure. But then I thought, what the hell, why not see if it starts.

I turn on the ignition. Again, speedo sweep, no tach sweep. I press the starter button, it carnks and starts!

Still, no tach though. So, I let it run for 15 minutes and shut it down.

Then I proceed to remove the tach and speedo. I remove the connectors, apply dialectric grease, put them back together and again turn on the ignition. Starts right up. :)

Still no speedo sweep. :(

THEN, I remember reading that you said that you found the heated grips fuse was blown. I checked the same fuse on my bike and sure enough, blown. I replaced it and then started the bike again. EVERYTHING NORMAL. It even sounded like it was idling smoother, the paint looked better and the chrome shined brighter. It's amazing just how interelated everything is and how much power one seemingly unneccessary fuse can hold over the world.

Thanks for the suggestion, it worked!

Glad the fuse suggestion worked I know it sounded crazy... well at least you did not have to pay $87.00 like I did to find it out that the hot grip fuse is somehow related to the tac. Glad you are up and running !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have to look through the electrical wiring diagram to trace how the heated grips are interelated to the tach. It seems odd to have an accessory circuit blended with the primary wiring harness. But, I'm not British, so the logic may not make any sense to me............ ;)

BTW, the battery seemed to be plenty strong on subsequent starts.

Dave,
Can you check the fuse in your defibrillator as I may be over your way sometime (I'm a prime candidate for a cardiac event) and don't want to fail to re-start due to a blown fuse. :)

Only joking mate, glad you got it sorted.
