Id like to chip in here , this is only a guess but makes sense as to how these things keep splitting and it has nothing to do with over tightening. The bear claw over the ramair is a tight fit , when the engine is revved it twists therefore twisting the filter up against the claw , the only give is in the rubber boot area but because the clamps are metal and have a reasonably sharp edge they cause fatigue in the rubber along that line. Fitting them with wide zipties in place of the metal clamps may help alleviate this fatigued area , i only really thought about this last weekend when i noticed how much my individual filters lifted from engine twist while revving .
