Nasty burning smell!

... I suspect the other wires are possibly my indicators and I may have disconnected them in error....

You cannot 'disconnect' your turn signals at the alarm connector - again, those are just parallel outputs from the Alarm directly to the signals themselves (do not use the turn signal switch or relay); so if those wires are unconnected that is not a problem.
The only common factor in the signals and the brake light is the Fuse (and you will likely find horn does not work either)

Actually also off that same fuse #4 is pin 6 - the constant power supply for the alarm - so if you connected pin 6 to something then again, that would be cause for the fuse to blow (or it may have simply blown when the alarm module smoked)

I think I'll stick to my beefy ABUS disc brake lock with alarm, and maybe a hidden GPS tracker...

Which one do you have?
the 8008 I see has a very robust 16mm pin! (mine is 14mm)
But spec says 'only' 100db siren - not sure what that actually sounds like (?) but the Xena is (spec'd anyway) at 120db and can attest that is SERIOUSLY ear-splitting loud!

I have the older 8000 model with a 14 mm pin, but I agree the 8008 looks great. It's not quite as gigantic as the old 8000 and that may be a good thing. It's loud enough, in my opinion.

Some Xenas have the issue though that they got that loud sound because they have an external speaker (on the outside edge of the lock).

... so thieves ram a screwdriver through it... or just tape over it and muffle it.

The Abus doesn't have the speaker exposed. And because the ABUS have a physical switch that gets pushed in when you put it on the lock, they just don't go off when they're off the bike, ever, and I have yet to have even one false alarm.
Xena owners complain a lot about them going bad though.

I had a Scorpio alarm and it wasn't nothing but a nightmare. Always something wrong with it and it WASN'T my fault. They are 100% junk. First module the speaker went out .... bought another module.... second module the turn signals quit flashing..... hooked up the old module the turn signals flashed....?????...... internal in the module.... PITA junk.

Here's a couple of pics that show the additional wiring coming from the alarm unit. In have cut the plug and soldered it up and plugged it back in, and yes it works. Also, you were right DEcosse it had taken the fuse out again. One last question, my engine management light is still illuminated. Is this normal due to me messing about with various plugs to gain access in there and will it reset itself?
Update, I left it to do a twelve minute tune and alls well. Many thanks again folks for the input and support.
