Troubleshooting electrical issues by smell

Actually back to OP question. I would look how the harness was mounted. It is very conceivable that he harness was allowed to move around chaffing the wires on on the chassis, on themselves within the harness, and or wiggling the plug connections resulting in shorts or extra resistance.

I've had several wires break on my Roadster and all have had brittle insulation and all have been located around the headlights

If it's your 2013 Roadster there is no way wires should break on a bike of that age. It makes me worry about the future of mine as there seems to be more build faults on these bikes than most other makes.

Yep...I've had a few niggly little problems from the time i bought it, blown indicator the day i rode it home, can't keep a horn cover intact, took 3 goes to make the valve cover gasket fit without leaking blah blah blah...definitely the most fragile of all the bikes I've owned. She's still my favourite though

Very good point! The other thing to consider, is as mentioned above about the CSA of the cables - Cross Sectional Area - Too small for the load or demand and the cable heats up, breaking down the insulation and we have smoking/shorting and dead circuit. But once again, the fuse should have blown prior to the cable becoming hot enough to melt and short out! Possible remedy would be to re-run the feeds to the Aux lights but in a larger CSA cable - check what the current draw is for the lights and replace one (1) size up. ie. If a 1.00mm2 cable is recommended install 1.5mm2 and so on. Cannot find my reference table for the AWG equivalents...that's why we have google:rolleyes::rolleyes::roll:
