Metzlers with Avons?

I would never plug a MC tire. I do keep an old tire in the garage just in case I have an emergency. Luckily I have a spare wheel for each position. I bought new eheels because the orginals looked like crap. These tires are not available on every street corner. I figure I can always get someone to bring me a tire to get back if I'm within a 1/2 day ride.

So what mileage difference , if any, between a Metz and an Avon rear then? My Roadster's rear rubber looks more than half worn at 2500miles without any m-way riding at all, nearly all twisty roads, so I'm going to order a new tyre just to have it ready in the garage, not wait for a week when i need it. I've always found avons good tyres, so the Cobra is the one to go for? I usually get two rears to a front in tyre life so can make up the pair next time. (I know about the Cobra recalls)
And i'd never consider a car tyre, sorry, but here the insurance companies would throw out any claim faster than the Rocket accelerates!

I got 1 and 1/2 rear for a front. I'm now running a cobra front and metz rear. Handles really nice, the cobra front is much snappier than the metz was. If you do the on and off ramps at speed, you will notice that the front end does a good deal of scrubbing since the bike is sooooo heavy. The front tire will wear the sides out befor the center like that of course. So be careful when the metz starts to show wear, it gets slick.
When the rear goes this time, I'll be either going with the Eagle F1 in the garage, or a smaller CT the guys here have been recomending. Either way .... I'll never pay for another Metzler again.

I think the Metzlers come worn out from the factory, so Avon has to get better mileage.

What do you mean by 'much snappier'? I am about to replace my front and I am considering an Avon, but more info. on what the differences are would be much appreciated! :)

It changed direction, or "flopped" from one lean angle to the other much easier than the Metzler on the front ever did. It is noticably quicker over into a corner. Suprised me a little at first, but easy to get used to. I like the combination alot.

Avons

I had a pair of Cobra's fitter a couple of months ago and they are great:) feels like a new bike again.

I would never fit Metz again, good when they are new 'but, too much hard work when they are wearing down.. I thought I was a wrestler.

I checked my rear serial no. after the Avon recall, it was higher so no worries.

So did I describe the "snap" they give to the steering well enough? I assume you know what I mean about the way an Avon feels compared to a Metz, they are just "quicker".

Yes HF you are correct the steering does follow the lean angle easily, much like the bikes that are lightweight, I think from my experience that the Metz make the steering progressively heavier as they wear.
Both my front and rear Metz wear profile was favouring the road camber, Being a heavy bike I guess side slip was the cause, consequently the rear took on an odd 3 profile shape towards the end of its 7000 KM and the front was similar but also some scalloping was evident, quite frankly with 2up it was a real handful in tight corners and at slow speeds I needed to be goliath.
Having said all of this I have to be honest because I have only done a couple of thou K's on the avons....But I am confident, Avon has been around for Years in the UK and the different Rubber compound must give more milage and the wear pattern would have to be better. I am not saying Metz are a bad tyre here, they are a good tyre but that my personal preference is the Avon Cobra, I suggest you just try the Avon Cobra for the little extra in cost, I think you will be surprised:cool: Hope this helps JR...

Well I've just ordered a Cobra rear for my Roadster - 3450miles from new , 10 weeks use, and the Metz is finished. I suppose that's the price of all that torque, and i've done no motorway miles at all, so it's not squared off - hope the Metz front / Avon rear will work ok until I need a new front too - better start saving now!

Can you use a table jack under the sump to lift the beast or is it going to drop forwards when I take the rear wheel out?
