keeping the shield up

WD-40 and some time. Just spray it on and let it set. for the nasty stuff it may take a couple applications. The longer you let it set the easier it is too clean I spray then stop for an adult beverage, Repeat as needed, WD-40 that is.:bch:

...EB-Green instead of Duct tape. That stuff holds submarines together!:D
I've no idea what EB-Green is; but if you're a fan of duct tape you've got to give Gorilla Tape at try:
New, Tough Gorilla Tape | BestStuff
MLT-9007 - Gorilla Black Duct Tape 1.88" by 35 Yards Super Strong, Extra Sticky, Completely Durable - Manufactured by: Cheaper Than Dirt
This is some VERY tough 300mph tape. Should hold the wind screen on without metal brackets :D On the other hand, the thickness may be just the right stuff to replace the rubber surrounds/grommets.

I have heard that Goo Gone is a good product. I have tried it once and it did not work for me. I had one of those clear window vent things that go over the window on the outside of my truck that got hit by a hail stone. I took it off and the stick on goo is still there. It will probably be there when they recycle the truck.

replace the gooey stuff with some real rubber, go to ace hardware or similar and look in the plumbing section for some rubber connectors...

you can cut one to fit 2-4 clamps and split it down the side to get it around the fork tube

Don't use WD-40 on your truck paint IF you've considered a repaint. Goo Gone is good for removing price tags from glass and that's it. :(

I was redoing a sail boat sometime ago and ran across a rubber distributor here that sold different thickness rubber remnants. The real rubber would last a good while and give good service. Let me know if you can't find a distributor in your area. The inner tube idea is a good one as well. Just rough up the surface so it doesn't slip if you double it. Good luck.

I use WD-40 on everything, it works great on road tar on cars trucks, and bikes. I havn't seen any damage yet but I do need new glasses. I also works great to take the black water stains off a RV. I have used it on aluminum and Fiberglass skins, I buy the crap by the case. I think it makes a better cleaner than lube. Give it a day an it evaporates.!!

peanut butter will work very well for removing tape glue, or all of those stickers that dealerships put on. just peel the stickers off and apply a thick coat of peanut butter, leave it on for a few hours, then wipe off, maybe repeat if necessary. it has always worked for me, and never hurts any finish. I always use skippy creamy, I don't think you should use crunchy. I usually use a rag to wipe it off. but you could lure a neighbors dog over to clean it up. it might actually do a good job on those hard to reach places.
