Pay the man a hourly living wage straight away. And also give him a monthly stipend for his tools.
My buddy was a lifelong motorcycle mechanic, owned his own shop for 10 or 15 years, this was few years back, local dealer offered him $10/hr.
Triumph, not Harley, but same thing. Their rate was $105/hr at the time, if I recall

it makes sense how so many mechanics have walked away from stealerships across this country to work for a small shop or start a shop of their own. Not to mention all independent's like zippers/baxter's (also on youtube) etc who have made a living correcting bikes which should have been right leaving the factory. The older Harley's like just about everything but especially Harley were much better made.
