Very common problem. You'll probably want to get the Eastern Beaver wiring kit to prevent it from happening again. This is what was required to get to the switch and repair inside. I'm pretty sure the '06 will be similar to the 2011 Roadster....

Yup, I remember, usually the white wire burns off where attached to ignition, because they ran the headlights through the ignition switch

Does yours give you trouble when running or is it while trying to turn key? My 06 has a intermittent hesitation type cut out while running which seems to be in the wiring harness under the tank/around the headstock area somewhere but its proving difficult to isolate...

Chances are excellent that it’s in the switch.

sounds similar.
I can tap the key or turn handle bar slightly to correct.
this problem started last year.
since then my wiring harness was replaced and updated with the recall extension.
I'm pretty sure it's right at the key.
I hope upgrading to a fob will correct condition.
only a matter of time before it cuts out during operating at high speed passing or a slow maneuver and catches me off guard.
always ready to clutch at present.

As stated, check the white wire under the tank, too. I have a 2010 Touring. After I bought it I notice that white wire (plug has about 8 wires in it) was by passed and patched. I got me that Eastern Beaver by pass right away. Mine would not start and ran intermittent when it did, but that was the second positive battery lead grounding out on the frame.
I checked the ignition switch in the process, too. On an 06, might not be a bad idea to get that by pass, anyway.

Hmm, I also have a 2010 Touring, it was my understanding that the problem was corrected by then, the headlights did not run through the ignition. Thankfully I have not had any issues.
