Ok, I have an 07 Classic and I love it, but it isn't what I really want.
I want a bike that doesn't exist. I want the hard saddle bags of the touring edition. I could go either way with the rear tire. Large like mine or the smaller touring rear would be fine. I do want to add a trunk, and I may add a Harley trunk in the future. I will not, absolutely have a motorcycle with the gauges on the fuel tank. Not in 100 years! I hate that! I love having my gauges on the handlebars where I can see them, where they belong!
I have even considered getting a Road Glide fairing, and adapting it to the bike too...

So now where are we? I need a bike that is set up to go on the long hauls. I have about 150hp at the rear tire and I wouldn't want any less with such a big bike. Since I am not going to buy or build a Harley I guess I need to build a custom rocket 3?

So time to do some serious research. Is the rear swingarm, or the frame for that matter different from the touring models compared to the roadster or classic? Will the smaller wheel and or fender from the touring bike work on the roadster?

Lets add ABS to the equation. Since I am building a bike I want, I guess I better add abs.
So what frame do I need? I know there is a huge power difference between the roadster and the touring bikes. Is the engine different too? Maybe just the cams?

I'm thinking I need a roadster ecm and wiring harness and gauges
Perhaps the back half of a touring? Definitely need to keep the dual headlamps, or get a fairing.

I need a lot of information to see if this is even possible.

I mean I guess I could fabricate some brackets to fit the touring bags to my classic, but I'm not sure how it would look. I personally like the look of the touring tank better, but it isn't that big of a deal. I could always get one and shave it down I'm sure.

It is strange that I like so many different aspects of each bike but not the way that they were thrown together. Roadster has a better front fender than the touring...

Anyway, this is a paper project at the moment. So any and all suggestions and facts are welcome. Measurements are a total plus and greatly appreciated!

By the time you make all the changes you have outlined, would it not be cost effective to upgrade to a 2010 or newer for abs and add some aftermarket hard bags and even a fairing if you want one? All those are available aftermarket.

Okay here we go,

There are many fairing options: Corbin, Tsuyaku(?) and others that don't take any modification to adapt to a Rocket.

Plenty of aftermarket hard bags: Corbin again, Hardstreet and others.

Rear end of Touring is different than the Roadster. Narrower tire means angle on the drive is different.

Dunno if ABS is available on touring (pretty sure it is, but don't hold me to it). It's optional on Roadsters before 2013 and standard after 2013.

Engine and transmission in touring are the same, only difference is tune. The touring can pull as much power as the Roadster.

Gauges are always in the tank for touring, but I think I've heard of a couple guys moving them.

Sounds like your best bet would be to get a touring, get a fairing, and move the gauges.

There's no difference in the engine or transmission. It's just the tune.

I'm doing exactly what you outlined above to an '09 standard at this very moment

Why would you just not go buy a Touring , be a hell of a lot easier moving the speedo (fitting Standard or Roadster or even custom gauges ) than all the stuff you outlined. Don't really make sense does it

Ok, so a r3t is the better starter platform.
Well now then we at least have a starting point.
Now you are telling me you can add 50hp to a touring bike just by changing the tune? That just seems crazy to me.

So, next up is the gauges. Will roadster gauges work on a touring bike? I would assume that it would be a different wiring harness. I mean does a touring even have a tach?
Does it need a different ecm too?

Not going to run a batwing fairing. No way. 2 headlights are a must, so road glide fairing it is I guess. Custom brackets for that I suppose?
Guess we are getting closer...

The only 2 style hard bags I like are the triumph touring bags or the harley ones. I like the look of the extended ones too. More room for more stuff!
