I checked my oil today, sitting on bike upright, and no oil was registering on the dipstick. I got very concerned about this and checked it a few times with the same result.

So I immediately got some oil which I had close by, and emptied about 400ml into the engine thinking that would do the trick. I checked the oil again and still no oil on the DS. So I got more oil and put in about 200ml more and still nothing.

I did all of this without starting the engine first because I'd read on a website that it doesn't make any difference whether you check the oil cold or hot. So I went back to the bike, turned it on and let it idle for a couple of minutes. When I checked the oil again, the level was sky high, about an inch or even more above the max level mark.

Now I have at least, 600ml more than i should have in there, but after a very long, hard ride, I didn't experience any problems, or leaks and the bike ran fine.

Bottom line is, should I be worried about this or can I just let it ride? I've also read that because it's a dry sump, overfilling doesn't hurt the engine. Can anyone confirm this or has anyone done this with or without negative effects?

Many thanks.

It is a dry sump that is why you need to let it idle for a couple of minutes prior to checking the oil. It won't hurt your engine but I would take some out out of worry of blowing the oil cap off and spilling oil on you or your bike.

Exactly what Pig9r said you won't do any harm except from the risk of over pressurisation blowing the dip stick out, it might never happen but if it did it could ruin a good ride.
Any time you read something that contradicts the owners manual either check here on the forum or ask your dealer (If you have a good one)

The manual says to start the bike, let it idle for one minute, shut it off and then check.

I was wondering how it was properly checked so I had to look it up.

my 07 rocket like that if it sits a few days no oil shows on stick it sure is hard to start and run a few minutes then check stick with no oil on stick thinking does it have any at all i know it dont leak or burn it has to have some in it but how can anyone start a motor with no oil showing on the dipstick
