How To On Fork Spring Changeout

hi
just thought i would say a little more.
if all you are doing is changing springs all you would have to do is remove ft axle, remove the bottom bolt in the fork(the fork oil will come out)then back out the top cap and the asy will slide out.
i was also thinking if you had a tube about a 18inches long that would fit over the damper rod asy you could drill to holes and weld 2 nuts on the pipe take two bolts 4or 5inches long that would screw through the pipe and into the sleeve and that would control spring when you take off top cap.
if you would compare the springs i would like to know the measurement of old and new.

Does anybody have a picture of the fork tube removed with the fork leg still in the bike ? I would like to change to a lighter oil but didn't want to tear the whole front end apart again. When you do it the way your talking about do you put the lower tube back in and add the oil through the fork cap ?

The answer is sorta of yes. once you pull the bolt out the oil will come out then you can unscrew the top cap and lift the asy out. put it in a can and press down on it a few times to get a little oil out of it. put it back in. and put bottom bolt and tighten bolt.when you raise the fork(or just put the tire and axle back in)then bring the lower forks up about 4 inches you can take a small funnel and pour your 667ml in ea tube. the funnel will be against the sleeve just below the top cap. with the top cap unscrewed as you raise the lower forks the top cap sleeve and spring damper rod raises. Of coarse you start with the front wheel off the ground.

ps my bike is the 07 rocket III classic
the manual that i have is triumph III
i can only assume that the touring is the same

in your case i would not remove any thing but the axle bolt. if your not changing seals everything stays put.

Dang this sounds doable. I surely don't want to remove anything that doesn't need removing. I have the service manual and have read it ..... still got a thousand questions. I will be watching this thread. And will be waiting on the out come after Rocket Scientist does his..... lol!

I wouldn't wait for me. I probably won't do it this year. I'm trying to stay away from anything to challenging this year. I'll probably do it next winter after I have gotten my health back. But if you want to do yours first be sure an take lots of pictures

This would be over my head. If I stop by my local motorcycle mechanic (not a dealership) and ask how much it would be just to install the springs (me buying the springs) then that would more than likely be the persuader I need to do the job myself. lol

That's like asking your doctor what he charges for a simple surgical procedure. Then you do the self-inflicted vasectomy with a hammer.....

My bud the MC mechanic mentioned a length of the right diameter PVC pipe, so I think he knows what he's doing. I'll take some pics tomorrow when I do mine.

FWIW, the spring compressor tool is only $45, less than I expected. T3880067 Triumph Fork Spring Compressor.
