Ride
Rocket 3 Classic
I have a second hand 06 Classic. Bought it 2 years ago with just 2000 miles on it. Currently it has 8000 but it has started playing up. During the late summer, it wouldnt start. Kill switch on, lights on, needles did thier thing but nothing from the starter. Tried in neutral/in gear, stand up/down, kill switch on/off. Nothing. Moved it to a safer place on level ground to phone the AA and she started! No problems since till yeaterday. I was pulling away from a junction in 1st gear it just died. Obviously the rear simply locked up as I had only just started moving so it fell over and threw me off! Fortunately I have crash bars and foot plates so it didnt go down far and no damage done except to my pride. Wouldnt start immedeatly but suddenly fired so off I went home - incident free. Could it be the alarm? If so, how do I over ride it? The dealer gave me a plug to by pass it when I bought the bike. He said its low mileage but it was 8 years old at the time and it may give me trouble in the future.
Any thoughts?

Since you have the bypass connector I would pop the tank and do away with the alarm. Give that a try. You should see the connector there on top of all the wiring. It will be the only connector the by pass will fit onto. Sounds like a electrical gremlin has took over.

Sounds like you're dealing with two different problems. One it won't crank sometimes and two the bike just dies. :banghead:

Cheers, I'll give that a go in the morning. Thank you.

I would certainly agree to start by eliminating the alarm as a point of contention.

Actually that's not quite correct Mully - it will also fit the bar-switch connectors!
The alarm is connected via an extender harness that runs from the main harness connector under the tank, towards the area under the seat, behind the battery - you can actually connect the bypass connector at the junction between the extender and the alarm, which is going to be more accessible than having to raise the tank to connect it directly to the Main Harness. This interface between alarm & extender may be shrouded with a heat-shrink sleeve at this junction - see the OEM Alarm Installation instructions for additional assistance - http://triumphinstructions.com/ProdDocs/A9808066-US.pdf

These could actually both be explained by the alarm - the alarm has two interlocks, one for the ignition and one for the starter - so it is possible that in the first instance the starter interlock was open (while the ignition interlock was on) and in the second case the whole ignition interlock cut.
Now that is absolutely NOT a conclusive diagnosis, just explaining the possibility - and indeed it could still be separate issues as @mully95 suggests and may need more investigation.

If not the alarm , could it possibly be the tilt sensor ? A long shot I know , it's just weird it started after being moved ! Hope you get it sorted soon and cheaply ?

I had the same problem a few years back, lights, horn, everything worked but when i hit the switch nothing happened, turned out to be the clutch switch, in fact, i think it is malfunctioning again because when i hit the button with the clutch pulled all the way it will not start, i have to play with the clutch a little, let it out a hair and it starts cranking, try that and see if it helps:)

Maybe check the main ignition switch connector under the tank, especially if it doesn't have a headlight bypass relay fitted

The key-switch would normally be a prime suspect - but if the lights on and gauges swept, then that circuit to run starter should be complete.
However that circuit could make bike cut out if it did break contact
