I ordered an HJC 3x. After I pounded the foam in the forehead and back of the head (occipital region) the helmet fit on my head. BUT the chin bar was hard up against my chin.

Picked up a Vega 4x today. What a difference! I would rather have the articulated helmet, but at least this fits. Finally I can wear a full-face helmet.

If any of you have big noggins, consider the Vega. My head is 26 1/2 inches around and the 4x fits nice. They also make a 5x. :D

I think HJCs run small. I have the modular (wear glasses), and had to get a 2X. And no, I don't have a swelled head, unlike (insert name here). :)

I too am circumfrencially challenged in the head department... I had serious problems getting a helmet to fit. I tried every helmet in every size, with no luck. What I've ended up with is an Arai TourX. It looks like a moto cross helmet, but has a full working visor. The peak/skip part is removable however, and it can be used as a regular helmet with different fittings which are supplied. Having said that, the skip works well as a shade when the sun is in your eyes. The bonus is that in black with a dark visor, it looks mean! I wear an XXL, a size which wouldn't work in Arai's other helmets. I think it helps that it has a more extended shape to the front. It also comes with different internal pad options.
Hopefully this link will work to show you how it looks with the various permutations, although it's not best in white IMHO -

Great quality and well worth a look. Good luck!

Yer heads aren't big ole melons. They're probably just shaped like this...

Great Billy,

Let me know how you get on with it. I had a 'top of the range' shoei before which was a reasonable fit, but my next one - a Raid model - hurt and the front was too close to my face. The Tour-X is a perfect fit, the only down sides being it is probably a little noisier and draughtier than a more conventional helmet, but there's no point in a silent and draught free helmet if it cripples you...

God luck with it!

Drof.

Big size helmets are like big size clothes... It depends on the manufacturer, cut and length of the pants, shirt, etc... 2x Fulmer articulated helment fits great, saved my life in my crash... 2x or 3x HJC or M2R, forget it!!!! Too constricting around the chin and lower face... You can't get Fulmer on line, but there are plenty of dealers... Special order usually takes 30 days...

Mike...

Don't worry mate - Arai's never fit me either! This is the first one I've had, as I said before the Shoei's were always better for me. I did try one of these locally before I bought though...
