I would like some help. I need to know the best way to hook up the power to a gps unit so it will turn off with the ignition. I don't really want to hook up to a cigarette lighter plug, but I am not sure where to get the power from. I know there is a grip heater connection under the tank. Can I tie into that?
Any help would be appreciated.

I mounted my TOMTOM rider 2 using a RAM mount. The mount stays on the bike most of the time and the power supply is plugged into it and the GPS clips onto the mount when being used. I took the power for this set up from the left headlamp parking light wire. I simply cut and spliced in. I now have juice when I switch on and it is unobtrusive too. I got the idea from another member of this forum btw.

Wiring to the ignition shut shouldn't be a big issue. I'll wager, Tomo or Flipper, the Pig or else someone will be along soon to answer that question, definitely. A link onto the heated grip wiring sure sounds the best route. I doubt a pair of grips and a GPS will have issue, on the same feed. The GPS actually uses very little power; given that many will operate for hours on their own internal PC ROM memory size batteries.

There is a plug on my R3T on the left side that is intended for a lighter or other hook-up. That is where I am going to put my power supply. I keep the GPS in my pocket and listen to the MP3 player. I can run for well over 6 hours without needing a charge so powering it up is not a big issue. I just plug it in when I get where I am going.

Big Willie- I think the R3T has a factory plug under the tank specifically for GPS?

Trirocket- I powered my Autocom from the heated grip accessory plug. It is switched with the ignition. What I ended up doing is crimping a pin to the power wire of the Autocom that would push into the heated grip plug, then used some heat shrink tubing over the plug and connection.

Haven't seen anything about it. There is a plug down on the left side behind a small rubber plug that is for power. I haven't taken my tank off to see what is there. Just leaving everything basically alone until I have to take something off. I am 3 hours from the dealer if I break or lose anything so I am keeping my hands to myself for now. Except for getting the tuneboy.

For Big Willie

Big Willie, there is an "official" Triumph accessory for this purpose listed in the Triumph Accessory catalog (online and hard copy) and it is listed under accessories for the R3T. It has a "Triumph" price on it ($19.95) and it is listed as a GPS Connector Kit (part# A9938065). It does not show a picture ("not available") but I would think that it would hook up to that wiring plug specifically for it and it would/should(?) be controlled by the ignition.
Hope this helps.

I just had this kit installed on my new R3T. It leaves 2 leads at the handlebars. My TomTom One uses a standard male cig plug to a USB plug into the GPS and I understand that the step down converter is built into the male cig plug. I'd like to get away from having to wire in a cig adapter and have that clunky connection sitting on my bars. I'm assuming that the leads have 12V (anyone know for sure?) and according to the Triumph install instructions the red is positive, the black negative (pretty conventional).

Any thoughts on how to get from the hanging leads to a finished setup?
