Do you really need the 10K service?

..ya might wanna take your bike in for the 'recommended' service intervals for documentation purposes if nothing else..if'n ya ever need the upgrade kit, the service record of your bike would probably be a deciding factor in your favor..just saying..

Will - mine will get done. May also get it's 20K done if it's hit inside 2 years.

2 reasons.

1) Triumph Warranty.
2) Dealer "Warranty".

Thereafter - it will get fettled at home.

Bingo! I had my 10 and 20K services done. I had one valve slightly out at 10K, which was a surprise. It can happen. Triumph has been pretty good about doing the upgrade out of warranty. I don't know if they tie it to service or not but it stands to reason that they would. I am also a firm believer in doing the required services, especially on Rockets that have a pretty good service interval. My 1150 BMW required a service every 6K, to include a valve job.

YES, but i don't buy it from the dealesrhip, they want 17.99 per quart, the auto parts have it for9.99,
How often you change yours??!!
I had the oil changed in the Rocket only once; and that was during the 600 mile service. Right now it has about 8K miles on it and I'm planning to change it at 10K.

My other two bikes - VTX1300R I change every 5K (Dino oil).

My DL650 VStrom gets new oil every 3.5K (Dino oil)

All of them get new oil filters each time.

Well, am undecided now if I should take it in, or wait until the 20K service.

One of my BIG reasons for being hesitant about doing it; is that I don't trust the dealers to do the work correctly. Had an issue with my Vstrom last summer; when I took it in for valve adjustment, oil change, new coolant (just got it all done at once) and they didn't even tighten the oil filter correctly - led to a nice leak. Makes me wonder if they even pulled the valve covers to check and adjust in the first place. I sure paid a lot for them to supposedly do it though....

I don't want to be in the same quandary with my Rocket, and the dealer.

Easy enough to set a few tank traps beforehand so you can see if they've been disturbed.... at least that will give you an idea whether they're fair dinkum. But even if they've been - say - under the valve cover, doesn't mean they've done it right. Bit worrisome.

Biggest prob with dealerships - and I know!! - is that they put the kids on the routine services because the good techs get bored & cost too much to use on routine stuff.

Best thing about doing it yourself is that you know straight away if the job's been stuffed up!

Some might say "when", not "if". :D

Ha!

Well, I do adjust the valves on my VTX1300 myself. I know that bike inside and out, and do my own work.

I could've/would've done the Vstrom myself; though it's a bit more involved and I didn't have the time last summer, though I do enjoy turning wrenches.

The Rocket though, I think; I'd rather leave to the factory mechanic. I suppose I could do it myself as well, but there's a point in time where one would rather be riding, than constantly adhering to maintenance schedules themselves; especially when we're talking about not one bike, but three.

My dealer - thankfully - is small. One tech and he's happy to let you stand and watch/help. The other guy (sales) keeps bringing coffee through.
