Dismantling the Rocket for painting - Work in Progress

Well, I decided to paint the oil tank orange after all. I saw a picture of a rocket with it painted to match the color of the bike, and I thought it looked really good.

It was a total pain in the ass to remove! All the other parts were easy, but the oil tank completely sucked.

You have to remove the entire air intake system (which I had already done to make room for the 3x K&N), but then you also have to remove the entire throttle body.

It turned to not to be technically complex, but I sure didn't like unhooking all those wires, tubes, and fuel injection components from the bike. Once the intake manifold is removed, the oil tank comes off with just 3x bolts, plus the removal of the middle drain plug, so that part was easy.

I sure hope I can put humpty dumpty back together again.

Mike, don't do it. Come on over to one of my stores, you won't be sorry. Don't buy that big box LG/Whirlpool/Maytag crap. We carry 60 different brands including the ones you'll find there at Lowes & Hell Depot...

Thanks for the kind offer Marcus. I should have been more clear. We bought a new stove, microwave and dishwasher last year at one of the smaller appliance dealerships. No big box stores for me. I always check first at Ace before going to one on hardware stuff, like the heater I just bought.

Now comes new cabinets, countertop, sink, fixtures and floor, plus carpeting throughout the house. It scares me even thinking about it.

I'd rather spend the money on my new shop and a new exhaust for the Rocket. I'm going to have to go back to work. :D

Geek Law, you are my new hero. You are really tearing that baby down to parade rest.

This is a great winter project.

Aaaaahhhh ... thanks Gasket!!!

The parts are OFFICIALLY with the painter now. We drove them up today in the very crappy weather, from Cornelius to Vancouver, WA, about 50 miles each way. But at least he can get started now.

Chris (evilbob) is sending me a spoiler from the UK, but hasn't arrived yet, so I'll have to take that up next week (should have just had it shipped to the painter). Anyway, here are pics of all the parts at the painters, and of the snow in my backyard this evening.

It is going pretty good here right now. We took the 5:30 PM ferry back from Seattle and it was a rough drive home from the Bremerton ferry terminal. We are supposed to get quite a bit more snow overnight.

sigh....

such a watse of perfectly good and rare Graphite tins...

oh well, good luck!!!

Oh man ... I'm killing regulator by painting over perfectly good tins when, from what I can infer, his must have more than a few nicks and dings. I wish you were out this way regulator, and indeed, I could paint over some banged up tins and give you my nice shiny ones.

C'est la vie.

This painter is awesome. The work that I've seen looks amazing. I cannot wait to see his work on MY bike. Moreover, I cannot wait to get my bike back together. Besides painting the tins, I did the gas tank/level mod, the 3x K&N mod, and will be doing the stebel horn mod, and I haven't even had a chance to start up the bike (no gas tank).

I get nervous doing more than one thing at a time I just hope she starts up and purrs ... especially considering that I completely removed the throttle bodies!

Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

mine are more then nicked and dinged..

I don't really spare the horses...

BUT youve got a great start to a neat project...

I'm about to whip out a can of spray paint myself.... need to see if walmart carries graphite...

Looking Good!
Geek Law, while waiting for the paint to be finished, do you need to be ordering o-rings or gaskets for reinstalling the oil and gas tanks? Hate to see you get it all back together only to have an oil leak!
