Dismantling the Rocket for painting - Work in Progress

Looks good regulator! I like the fairing. I cannot believe you got it to fit so well.

As for the o-rings on the oil tank, there was only one on the tank itself. I took it off and kept it, It had actually only been on there for about two weeks because the dealer had taken the oil tank off when they removed the engine from my bike, and replaced it with a new one.

The shame of the whole project of stripping the bike, is that the dealer had most of these parts off the bike when they did the engine upgrade, and then put it back together, only to have me take it apart again!

Oh well.

I think I'll eventually strip mine down and paint it as well...

want to chop the fenders a bit first...

but I think I'll do a DARKER gray, with a lot of metallic in it!!!

want some sparkle...

Geek: Good going on the paint, mine is also a work in progress, but black is so much easier to deal with! :)

Hmmm. Me thinks I'll have to find an old Rocket to customize. I just can't bring myself to tear into mine.

so I wonder how much I'll need to spend to repaint my whole bike and fairing

I got quotes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. In the end, I found a guy on Craigslist who is older and does work on the side for cash. He says he's been doing body work and paint for 33 years. His shop had two vehicles in progress, he had tons of pictures, and seemed to know his stuff.

I expect high quality, but I haven't gotten the parts back yet, so I cannot say for what the end result will be. I'm paying him about $1,000 for a two-tone job, pin stripe, and clear coat. He say's he'll do 3x coats of each color, then cut them back via wet sanding, then a coat of clear which is cut back, and then four more coats of clear.

So we'll see. I'll post lots of pics when I get the parts and do the reassembly, and then we'll see what level of quality results.
